CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS
Immovable and Slightly Movable Joints
Functionally these joints areÂ
immovable joints (synarthrosis)
slightly movable joints (amphiarthrosis)
Structurally these joints areÂ
bony fusions (synostosis)
fibrous connections between bones (suture, gomphosis, or syndesmosis)
cartilaginous connections between bones (synchondrosis or symphysis)
Freely Movable Joints (Synovial Joints)
Functionally these joints are all freely movable (diarthrosis) and structurally they are synovial joints. There are 6 types of synovial joints:
plane
hinge
pivot
condylar
ball-and-socket
saddle
Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
