CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS

Immovable and Slightly Movable Joints

Functionally these joints are 

• immovable joints (synarthrosis)

• slightly movable joints (amphiarthrosis)

Structurally these joints are 

• bony fusions (synostosis)

• fibrous connections between bones (suture, gomphosis, or syndesmosis)

• cartilaginous connections between bones (synchondrosis or symphysis)

Freely Movable Joints (Synovial Joints)

Functionally these joints are all freely movable (diarthrosis) and structurally they are synovial joints. There are 6 types of synovial joints:

• plane

• hinge

• pivot

• condylar

• ball-and-socket

• saddle
