What a C-33 License Actually Means
A California C-33 Painting and Decorating contractor license is a specialty contractor classification issued by the CSLB. To obtain and maintain it, a contractor must pass a trade and law examination, demonstrate a minimum of four years of professional-level experience, maintain active workers’ compensation insurance, carry a contractor’s bond, and meet ongoing renewal requirements. The CSLB can suspend or revoke the license for violations, complaints, or lapses in coverage.
When you hire a C-33 licensed contractor, you have legal recourse through the CSLB if something goes wrong. Hiring an unlicensed painter gives you none of that protection, and under California law, you may not be able to recover damages in civil court from an unlicensed contractor.
Why EPA Lead-Safe Certification Matters in the East Bay
Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, and surrounding cities have significant housing stock built before 1978, when lead-based paint was still in use. The EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule requires that contractors working in pre-1978 homes be certified. Uncertified contractors performing this work are subject to federal fines.
