Research Opportunities

Pathology Research UTSW

A lab group at UTSW is developing a software that automatically analyzes histology slides to detect cancerous cells in patient samples. In this position students will help in editing slides that have already been annotated by the Al to further improve its accuracy.


There is a powerpoint attached for basics and requirements of participating in the project. 100% remote, full onboard training program, with many further opportunities available (in person internships, recommendation letters...). You just need a computer and internet connection. This is a great way to get research hours while also working on novel technology.

BCM Tuberculosis Lab

Dr. Andrew DiNardo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine-Infectious Diseases is seeking to recruit a passionate undergraduate student interested in joining his Tuberculosis research lab at Baylor College of Medicine. This paid position is optimal for any students interested in medical or graduate school and requires familiarity with R or Python. The student will be in charge of iterations of single cell analysis using R or Python. Ideally, the student would want to commit for 2-4 years. Department of Psychology, and of Biology and Biochemistry

Dr. Beau Alward, Department of Psychology, and of Biology and Biochemistry is currently recruiting 2-3 paid positions for undergraduate research assistants this summer. The Alward Social Neuroscience Lab investigates the molecular and neural basis of social behavior using cichlid fish as a model species. This full-time, 10-week research experience will provide opportunities to learn research skills under the mentorship of the lab's researchers, post-docs, and senior graduate students. Ideal candidates are motivated, conscientious and demonstrate a strong academic record. Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Assistant

Dr. Yang Zhang, from the Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, is currently recruiting undergraduate students to work on exciting new projects related to the epigenetics and pathology of cardiovascular diseases associated with obesity, diabetes, aging, and kidney disease. These projects investigate mechanisms and strategies to establish novel biomarkers or treatments for cardiovascular diseases. Motivated students with a strong background in biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or pharmacology are encouraged to apply. They will be supported by NIH grants. Human Brain and Sensory System

Dr. Bhavin Sheth, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is currently recruiting motivated undergraduate researchers interested in understanding the human brain and sensory system with a background in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, psychology, or biology; individuals who are interested in acquiring human data, data analysis or statistics. A background in Circuits and/or signal processing and/or MATLAB or Python or programming, in general, is a bonus. Several volunteer positions are available on-campus/remote. Help Develop Computational Methods for Interpreting Images of Cells and Tissue

Dr. Badri Roysam, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has shared that opportunities are available for undergraduate students to help develop computational methods for interpreting images of cells and tissue acquired using advanced microscopes. Dr. Roysam welcomes students with an interest in image processing, computer vision, and machine learning methods, as well as students in the life sciences who may be interested in quantifying biological processes from images and video. This year, all of the projects will be remote. Undergraduate students will be paired with doctoral students. Some of the projects are paid, and others are voluntary. Contact Dr. Roysam via email.

Bonner ImpACT Program

Are you available Thurs 10:30AM-12 Noon and interested in ACT and college mentorship? ImpACT Needs You!

ImpACT is an ACT and college prep mentorship program that provides low-income high school students with additional support and resources to succeed in college and beyond! We do small group mentoring focused on teaching ACT test prep strategies and personalizing content for our students based on what they are interested in.

We are starting our virtual sessions soon, and we're looking for mentors available on Thursdays from 10:30-12 pm (Oct 6-Nov 17). Feel free to reach out if you're interested or have any questions via email at bonnerimpact@gmail.com


Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center

Looking for a way to gain experience through hospital volunteering? BSLMC is looking for volunteers who can commit to one four hour shift per week, for 6 months or more. Volunteers are essential in not only the hospital's operations but also in helping and caring for patients and visitors.

HEALTH-RCMI

Applications are open for the Student Volunteer Cadre. Apply if you are interested in health-equity research. The deadline for applications is September 30, 2022.

The volunteer cadre will be housed within the Community Engagement Core. Students will have the opportunity to participate in community health fairs, have exposure to community-centered research, and many networking opportunities with peers and employers.
