I am a researcher and academic in the fields of computational mechanics, composite materials, fracture, fatigue, and multi-physics modelling. My work focuses on the characterization, modelling, and simulation of heterogeneous and anisotropic materials, including fibre-reinforced composites, polycrystalline silicon, and other advanced engineering materials. I am particularly interested in understanding how complex material architectures influence mechanical behaviour, damage evolution, and failure across different length scales.
I am an Associate Professor and Head of the Material Testing Laboratory (MTLab) at the School of Civil Engineering, Sudan University of Science and Technology. I also hold the position of Visiting Professor at the University of Seville, Spain.
Previously, I worked at the Institute of Structural Analysis, Leibniz University Hannover, Germany, where I led research activities in fatigue and composite materials, including the Fatigue Research Group and later the Composite Materials Research Group. During this period, I supervised Ph.D. researchers, master’s and bachelor’s students, research assistants, and student assistants, and contributed to several research projects in computational mechanics, fatigue, fracture, and composite materials.
I obtained two doctoral degrees: a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Leibniz University Hannover, Germany, in 2017, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management from the University of Seville, Spain, in 2020.
One of my recent research highlights is the development and application of phase-field models for damage and fracture in fibre-reinforced composites, with a focus on predictive modelling, failure mechanisms, and scale-dependent effects. My broader expertise covers computational, inelastic, multi-physics, and data-driven modelling of materials and structures, with applications in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace, and renewable energy systems.
Throughout my academic career, I have been involved in research project management, grant acquisition, teaching, supervision, technical reporting, scientific publishing, and the development of academic and industrial collaborations. I have had the privilege of collaborating with internationally recognized researchers, including Prof. Laura De Lorenzis, Prof. Stefanie Reese, Prof. Manfred Kaliske, Prof. Bernd-Arno Behrens, Prof. José Reinoso, Prof. Behrouz Arash, Prof. Guoqing, Prof. Matteo Paggi, Prof. Mahdi, and many others.
In recognition of my research contributions, I have received several academic awards and distinctions. These achievements reflect both my scientific commitment and my passion for advancing the understanding and design of high-performance materials and structures.
In 2020, I founded Pro DEAN Consulting and Engineering, a consulting and engineering service dedicated to supporting research, development, education, and innovation in the engineering sector. The initiative reflects my interest in transferring scientific knowledge into practical engineering solutions and supporting industry, academia, and education through advanced modelling, simulation, and analysis.
With more than a decade of experience in multicultural and multilingual academic and professional environments, I value openness, collaboration, and scientific curiosity. My international background has shaped my communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills and continues to motivate my work at the interface of research, teaching, innovation, and engineering practice.
