History & Mission

The Asian American Journalists Association is a membership nonprofit advancing diversity in newsrooms and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of communities of color. AAJA has more than 2,000 members throughout the United States and Asia. Since its founding in 1981, AAJA has been at the forefront of change in the journalism industry, working towards the visibility and inclusion of Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists in newsroom leadership, and towards equitable and accurate coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and AAPI issues.

AAJA’s Portland chapter was founded in 1987.
