SaskCode consistently produces quality, high value content and experiences through curriculum aligned lesson plans, classroom kits and professional development. Areas of growth, such as inclusion of AI, may be addressed in the future.
Through virtual PD sessions and in person sessions, SaskCode has had general success in reaching a broad geographic area within the province of Saskatchewan. Few efforts have been made to stretch beyond Saskatchewan, but the narrow focus could be helpful in saturating the target area.
SaskCode has made efforts to be inclusive through loans of classroom kits, and free training. This has benefitted groups whose funding may be limited or shifted to other priorities. The focus on computer free coding also helps to ensure a greater reach.Â
Training sessions for SaskCode are free, well run and allow teachers to make begin incorporating computational thinking into their classes with minimal additional planning and effort. As a teacher, few programs that I have been a part of are as well supported through training.
Based on information freely available, SaskCode should be considered an excellent model for the public funding of educational programs. Although difficult to quantify, it reaches a wide geographic area with high quality content and teacher training providing a strong perceived return on investment. Going forward, CanCode or alternative funding would be well spent to continue this program.
