Tasty is one of the largest food networks in the country. Hundreds of millions of people all over the globe watch Tasty videos every year, and millions more visit their website, Tasty.co, to view their recipes.
Tasty is a media/news company that was launched by Buzzfeed back in 2015. Originally, Tasty was simply an additional page on the Buzzfeed website, added almost as an afterthought.
Tasty was just a food video series, so no one at Buzzfeed ever thought it would ever really take off. The content that was posted to the Tasty page was created by a skeleton crew of Buzzfeed employees just trying to fit in some overtime.
Although it started out incredibly small, Tasty has become one of the largest, most popular food networks ever created. As of 2018, only three measly years after its creation, Tasty had amassed over 68 billion lifetime video views across Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram combined. That's more views than there are people on Earth!
The publisher of the original Tasty webpage decided to make a Tasty Facebook page to help boost popularity. They decided to go with Facebook because they assumed that it would mostly be popular with older people. The Tasty Facebook page would post images and recipe videos of popular comfort foods.
The publisher of the original Tasty webpage was partially correct. Tasty was indeed very popular with older people, but it was also extremely popular with everyone else as well! In just a few short months, the Tasty Facebook page had blown up. Many of the videos posted to the page went viral and the original Tasty webpage became one of the most popular pages on Buzzfeed's website.
Although they were caught off guard by Tasty's sudden rise in popularity, employees at Buzzfeed acted quickly and began posting higher-quality content more frequently to both the Facebook page and the webpage. Soon, Tasty had its own website (still owned by Buzzfeed), called Tasty.co.
Although it has since branched out to countless other platforms, Tasty's original Facebook page still remains active to this day. Even after nearly a decade of posting the same content, the Tasty Facebook page has well over 100 million active followers and is still currently the most popular platform for Tasty.
Shortly after the creation of the Tasty Facebook page, the Tasty Twitter account was born. Rather than post the same recipe videos that were available on the Tasty webpage and the Tasty Facebook page, the Tasty Twitter account offered a new experience for Tasty fans.
The Tasty Twitter account focused more on posting images of popular foods, with links to the recipe videos on Facebook and the Tasty webpage. In addition to this, the Twitter account also posted links to food-based personality quizzes on the Buzzfeed website.
The mid-2010s was a time when these types of quizzes were just starting to get popular, and Buzzfeed capitalized on that heavily. The food-based personality quizzes posted to the Tasty Twitter account helped build Tasty's popularity immensely, not to mention Buzzfeed's, since the links would lead right back to the main website.
Once Tasty began gaining some major traction as a brand, Buzzfeed created the Tasty YouTube channel in January 2016. The Tasty YouTube channel quickly became one of Tasty's most popular platforms!
Many of the recipe videos posted to the Tasty YouTube channel quickly went viral, and more and more people began discovering Tasty. Although the channel itself has only 21 million active subscribers today (still an impressive feat, just not as impressive as their Facebook page), their recipe videos gain hundreds of millions of views each!
In addition to short-and-sweet recipe videos, the Tasty YouTube channel also produces other types of food-based videos, like challenge videos or interviews with celebrity chefs. Some of their most popular video series are the Make It Fancy series and the Time To Cook series.
After Tasty began taking the world by storm, Buzzfeed decided to branch out to as many platforms as possible. Soon after Tasty's initial creation and subsequent take-off, the Tasty Instagram page was created.
The Tasty Instagram page combined all of the most popular types of posts from all of the other platforms, which contributed to its success greatly.
The Tasty Instagram page posted short recipe videos, food images with links to recipes, and even the bizarre food-based personality quizzes that Buzzfeed was rapidly becoming known for. Today, the Tasty Instagram page has over 44.2 million followers, making it one of the most popular platforms for Tasty!
As I mentioned before, Tasty is currently one of the most popular food networks in not only the US, but globally. Tasty now has channels and pages specifically designed for other countries and their cuisines, such as Tasty Miam for the French, Proper Tasty for the UK, Bien Tasty for the Spanish, and many more. Tasty became a global sensation in less than a decade, and its popularity is still soaring!
Tasty may have started out as an obscure additional page on Buzzfeed's website, but it has since become its own monolithic brand. Tasty now has its own cookbooks, merch, cookware sets, and more that are all available both online and in-store. In addition to this, Tasty has a large, active presence on nearly every popular social media platform.
Tasty also has apps that are available on nearly every mobile device! People can connect with Tasty on nearly every platform imaginable, not just through social media. People can buy Tasty brand cookbooks and cookware to use in their own kitchens, can use recipes from their social media channels, and even download their apps to help them discover more types of cuisine.
Even though it was never expected to take off the way it did, Tasty blew up and it blew up fast. Within the first two months of its creation, Tasty accounted for over 10% of all of Buzzfeed's video views. A short few years later, Tasty accounted for over 50% of Buzzfeed's video views.
Tasty's views have only climbed higher and higher from there; it's become so massive that it nearly dwarfs Buzzfeed, its creator. Tasty became one of the world's most popular food networks seemingly overnight, but how did Buzzfeed do it?
Tasty owes most of its success to the spot-on marketing techniques used by its creators. The publisher of the original Tasty webpage was tasked with marketing it on social media, and had that publisher not chosen Facebook and Twitter as the first two social media platforms to advertise on, Tasty may not have blown up the way it did.
Tasty may be popular with everyone now, but in the beginning, it was being marketed toward older people. It was popular with older people because of the nature of the videos; parents and grandparents would use the recipes posted by Tasty to cook food for their families. By marketing Tasty on a platform popular with the older generation, Tasty became very popular very quickly. Facebook also makes it incredibly easy to share videos and posts with friends, which also contributed to how quickly the videos went viral.
Tasty is so popular today due to its large presence on every platform imaginable. Tasty has accounts on nearly every popular social media platform available; not only that, but it also has apps, cookbooks, cookware sets, merch, and more! You can interact with Tasty not only virtually, but physically as well, in your own kitchen!
