I've noticed that sometimes the AI tries to spell out what you typed into the prompt (especially when it doesn't know what to generate), but never gets the spelling right. Most of the time, it's just a jumbled mess of letters. Is there a reason for this?

This month, the Bee's Bookshelf selection is The Winterton Deception 1: Final Word by Janet Sumner Johnson. In this twisty middle grade mystery, thirteen-year-old twins Hope and Gordon enter a spelling bee in a last-ditch effort to save their family from financial ruin, only to find themselves in a cut-throat competition to uncover a fortune and dark secrets about the wealthy relations they've never known.

Mental imagery, or the ability to create a visual representation in your mind, is a powerful concept that is widely used in the world of medicine and psychology. Researchers are also finding that it has its place in education. More specifically, creating a mental image of a word can support visual reading processes (Bell, 2020). Research shows that this strategy benefits students diagnosed with dyslexia or dysorthography (Simos, et al, 2002; Krafnick, et al., 2011; Faber, 2006). In addition, creating mental imagery of a word is a strategy that can be used in the classroom to support reading and writing instruction. There are many strategies and methods used for teaching reading and spelling and mental imagery can be used in conjunction with them and as an Errorless Learning Method. This article will explore two errorless lexical spelling methods that support spelling instruction: teaching spelling patterns and the visuo-semantic method.

The examples above illustrate how errorless learning methods and mental imagery strategies can be used simultaneously to provide students with many opportunities to learn correct and appropriate spelling.

In conclusion, different literacy methods and strategies can be combined to provide an additional effective reading and writing intervention. It is essential to use all the evidence-based modalities available to us (e.g., gestural, visual, auditory, etc.), to support our students and to enable them to advance in learning to read and to spell. The mental imagery strategy for words is highly recommended for students with LDs. It offers many advantages for learning how to read and spell, and for reading and spelling remediation. Mental imagery, when combined with other strategies, is a winning avenue for teachers to enrich their literacy approaches to ensure practical and effective interventions with students in their classrooms.

In addition to faces, alternative stimuli have been studied in regard to the control of a P300 speller. Fernndez-Rodrguez et al. [19] investigated the emotional properties of pictures and their effects on BCI performance and found that the presentation of pictures above letters, regardless of their emotional content, resulted in better performance compared to the classic use of gray-to-white flashing letters. Unlike the pattern with familiar faces devised by Zhang et al. [4], different images were used for each letter in the paradigm presented by Fernndez-Rodrguez et al. [19]. This feature could be useful in the design of P300 spellers, as pictograms could be used to improve and facilitate communication [20].

Two spelling paradigms were tested in the experiment, which varied in terms of the flashing stimulus used: (a) famous faces shown in red with a white rectangle (RFW), based on [4]; and (b) neutral pictures (NP), based on [19]. For copyright reasons, the neutral pictures have been pixelated here.

Results for each participant, and average (standard deviation), in the copy-spelling phase in terms of number of sequences used, accuracy (%), and ITR (information transfer rate, bit/min) for each condition (red faces surrounded by a white rectangle (RFW) and neutral pictures (NP)).

The number of sequences chosen for the copy-spelling phase corresponds to the number of sequences needed to guarantee adequate accuracy, based on the performance of the classifier in the calibration task. Although the results from each paradigm were similar, fewer sequences were necessary to achieve an accuracy of 100% in the NP experiment than in the RFW one. Thus, more sequences were used in the RFW condition than in NP in the copy-spelling phase (4.83 and 3.58 sequences, respectively). The number of sequences could affect other variables related to the writing time, such as the ITR. Hence, as long as the accuracy remains acceptable, a decrease in the number of sequences used should be considered positive, as it will reduce the time required for each selection and will speed up the control of the interface, which could also improve the user experience.

This is a feature that lets you perform spell checking for the current image, all open images, or all images in the same folder as the current one. As questionable words are identified, you can select an alternative spelling, ignore the spelling warning, and add words to the dictionary so that future occurrences are not flagged as possible misspellings.

You can also copy-paste or drag Illustrator graphics to select and edit paths within the graphic. When you drag graphics from Illustrator, it works like the Place command, and the images appear in the Links panel, but you cannot set import options. You can also drag multiple files simultaneously.

A thumbnail image of the first graphic appears with the loaded images icon and the number of graphics selected for import. The names of the images appear in the Links panel with LP (Loaded in Place cursor) beside the name of the foremost image.

A contact sheet is a grid of thumbnail images, often used for pre-press analysis. In previous versions of Adobe Bridge (CS2 and CS3), you can create a contact sheet for InDesign pages with Create InDesign Contact Sheet option. Now, you can use the Adobe Output Module in Adobe Bridge (CS4 and later) to create a PDF contact sheet.

Sign language is a complex way of communication mostly used for deaf people where hands, limbs, head and facial expressions are used to communicate. Finger spelling is a system where each letter of the alphabet is represented by a unique and discrete movement of the hand. In this paper, we are interested in studying the properties of the spatial pyramid matching descriptor for finger spelling recognition. This method is a simple extension of an orderless bag-of-features image representation where local features are mapped to multi-resolution histograms and compute a weighted histogram intersection. The performance of the approach is evaluated on a dataset of real images of the American Sign Language (ASL) finger spelling. We conduct experiments considering three evaluation protocols. The first uses 10% of the data as training and the remaining as test, we achieve an accuracy rate of 92.50%. The second protocol considers 50% as training data, the accuracy rate was about 97.1%. Finally, in the third protocol, we perform a 5-fold cross-validation, where we achieve an accuracy rate of 97.9%. Our method achieves the best results in all three protocols when compared to state-of-the-art approaches. In all the experiments, we also evaluate the influence of the weights of the multi-resolution histograms. They do not have a significant influence in the experimental results.

Here, the 14-year-old wiz kid looks to the officials' table, after correctly spelling the word "gaminerie" to advance to round 15... a word he probably learned, while suffering from the flu... on a Saturday.

Here, Sophia Han of Tiajian, China, contemplates the spelling of "vermicide," during the third round of the 88th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee at National Harbor, Maryland, May 27, 2015. Just picture those little symbols, girl.

The 14-year-old from San Diego won the coveted honor after correctly spelling "guetapens," a French-derived word that means ambush, snare or trap... something she mostly certainly did not fall into, thanks to all those flashcards.

Here, Marcus Behling of Chandler, Arizona, ponders the spelling of the word "isagoge" at the 88th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 27, 2015. And if this facial expression is any indication, he's no doubt reviewing all the roots and patterns he knows, right about now.

The best images to create with a silent image are those that your enemies won't want to interact with. A spiked barricade, an acid pool, a lurking panther, a cage of thorns, a prismatic wall, a shark just below the surface of the water...

And if the opposition is so educated and smart that they cannot be fooled by images of summoned soldiers or other things that "magic doesn't work like that" for? Take "impossibly large objects" out of your "bag of holding" then dangle the bag over your "portable hole" and say, "I'll &*^%ing do it!"
