' MASINA IS MY HOME '
My family and my culture is home to me. This is because I feel same when I'm at home with my family. I feel as if everyone has a culture. Sharing and teaching others about it, gives people an over different perspective of what other culture are like.
As a Congolese person, I find it hard to identify what is and what isn't Congolese fabric this is because there is a huge confusion about where we get our patterns from.
In this project I will be making it clear to people that 'THIS' is Congolese culture and that 'THESE' are traditional Congolese patterns. I did my own research to educate myself on what is the specific traditional Congolese fabric and where its from.
To make my pattern I got an image of my grandparents neighbourhood off form google maps. I developed it into a pattern, making it look like Kuba cloth. I then prepped the image to do appliqué and collected both negative and positive pieces to experiment with.

To make the rug, I invested in a tufting machine and many tufting resources. The pattern is linked with my applique pillow case sample. The color scheme was based on the The Democratic Republic of Congo flag.
Meaning of the DRC flag - The colours of the flag has deep symbolism. The blue of the flag symbolizes peace. Red represents the blood of the country's martyrs, whilst yellow represents wealth that the country has. The star symbolises the country's bright future.
