10 ways to prepare for natural home birth

I have had 5 vaginal births. My first birth was a hospital birth, but I did have an epidural. I didn't like the fact that despite all of my preparedness, I didn't know that I was going to have to be face to face with the reality that I was going to be at the mercy of the epidural.

Water Birth

It was there, I was there. Hey why don't you just get it! You might as well since you're in so much pain!

Not what I imagined my natural birth to be like at all.

I guess natural birth depends on your definition. The term “natural” is a great marketing campaign for those, like Butterball, rest on people's ambiguous assumption that natural = good. Not always. Natural birth to me is physiological birth with no medication and is undisturbed. Meaning, there is no one there to project fears into my birth space and giving me warnings about how I better deliver my baby by such and such time “or else”.

Here are 10 ways to prepare for a true natural child birth at home

Hypnobabies

I cannot tell you enough how amazing of a resource to home birth this was. I truly cherish the amount of information this gave me. Prior to delivering my first child I had already been practicing hypnotherapy. Learning about how to incorporate deep relaxation into my birth was priceless. Either way you go, Mongan, is a truly appreciated asset for a natural home birth.

She teaches how to relax yourself and how important breathing is. The book is also filled with examples to follow.

I know what you may be thinking, “I am a Christian and this may not be appropriate for me”. And that's ok! I was concerned too, but the more I got to think about it and pray about it, the more I used “hypnotherapy” as just that- a therapy. There is no intention to take your pineal gland to the next dimension and talk with your spirit guide. Just as how psychology/counseling is not trying to convince you that Jesus isn't real or put wicked imaginations into your mind. These are therapeutic tools that really do help.

Controlled breath work is so important and you should take every stressful event as a way to practice your breathing and here's why. According to The Cleveland Heart Lab breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth releases nitric oxide. This is helpful for a variety of amazing things, but did you know that nitric oxide is actually a very potent pain reliever? It opens up your blood vessels to allow blood flow to the areas of the body for a very calming yet pain relieving sense.

Peppermint Oil

I have had 4 natural child births at home. Each time I have always had a peppermint oil bottle on hand. Studies have shown that peppermint oil is a very potent pain reliever. This works by blocking pain receptors in the brain.

For the months, weeks and hours following up to the delivery of my baby I do not use it so I make sure that my tolerance to it is very low. So when I do use it during the transition phase, it is very potent to me. I add a few drops on some toilet paper and while deep breathing when I inhale I inhale the peppermint. This has helped me so much for pain relief. I make sure I am using the highest quality of oil. I really like Plant Therapy, Emerick's Essentials, and if I have a friend or family member who are into Doterra or Young living I'll buy peppermint from them.

Towels

I always recommend that everyone who is planning to have a home birth create their own birth kit. Your midwife will have one, but creating one for yourself is a good idea. Things like face towels to use are a great idea to have on hand. These can be rolled up and placed in a crock pot with some water added to it. This allows the towels to be ready to use for if heat was needed. How refreshing this warmed towels are when you are in the thick of labor and need a dose of oxytocin. Just grab one out of the crock pot and place on your shoulders, forehead or neck. They are wonderful!

Having on hand larger bath towels is a must. These help to make sure that any fluid on the floor is taken care of. Sometimes your midwife will even need one just in case. It's always helpful to have lots of extra towels.

Drinks and snacks

Drinks and snacks is not even a joke. When you are in labor and having a home birth it is so nice to be able to rely on something nourishing to fall on when your energy levels get low. This helps to make sure that your labor does not stall out. If you are hungry and dehydrated your labor will stall. We don't want that so make sure that even when you think your contractions may be starting, you get yourself ample amounts of nutrition earlier on. And healthy choices at that.

Healthy Food, Healthy BABY

Early on in labor I will eat bacon and eggs. Just full protein because it keeps my energy up. By the end of delivery I don't even notice how hungry I am because a full plate of protein helped me stay satisfied and nourished. Because I also eat earlier on when labor begins, this helps me from throwing it up later in labor. Yes, I am that type that will throw up during labor usually it is just the fluids from drinking. Because I am planning ahead the protein is already far down the digestive tract it won't be coming back up.

Make sure that you have a meal plan for after birth because most births happen at night you may not be able to replenish yourself by ordering out. Have a blood building meal ready to go for after birth.

Contact plan

Please don't feel the need to contact everyone when you go into labor. You will be constantly bombarded with texts and calls and even family (who mean well) will just show up unannounced. This is hard for parents because it disturbs the mothers peace. We want and need all the peace and quiet.

You don't owe anyone an explanation or hour by hour update. Have a plan to contact them when it is convenient for you.

Drink Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Red raspberry leaf tea promotes the toning of the uterus. Fragrance is a compound in the leaf of the red raspberry that helps with tightening the muscles of the uterus. If you feel like you are having many Braxton Hicks contractions then obviously it is working! But you may need to scale back. One cup per day is all that is needed until you reach the third trimester then go ahead and drink 2 cups.

5w

Taken 5 weeks prior to birth, this combination of herbs is very helpful for women to get ready for their home birth. This herbal mix helps to generate a quicker birth, a better mental state and promotes quicker recovery. This should not be taken by women who have had prior cesareans and should be clear that there is no blue cohosh in the ingredients as blue cohosh has some side effects regarding heart issues. Taken by the guidance of your midwife, this supplement has helped many of women have easier home births.

Miles Circuit

The Miles Circuit is so helpful for in case your baby's position is not optimal or you body is experiencing prolonged labor. This helps the baby get engaged. Memorizing and practicing the steps for labor is incredibly beneficial for when the time comes you don't need to look it up you already remembered. Click here for the PDF and here is a link to their website

Your mental state

I cannot express to you how getting your mental state prepared is so important. You need to remember a few things:

Your body can and will push the baby out

You can do this

You are strong enough

You are totally capable of getting through childbirth naturally. Please stop listening to the people who are against your home birth plans. You have got to be strong enough to have boundaries with your friends and family about it. Who cares what they think? You know what is right for your baby and you certainly didn't do this for the twinkle lights.

You did the research, you spent time reading about why home birth is better. You asked women questions and watched the videos on the benefits for your baby. You didn't just wake up one day and think “yeah bro totally cool let's go for it” and be negligent to your newborn.

It's imperative that you stop listening to all the trauma that some people went through in their births. Because not everyone is you. Take your thoughts captive to Christ. If our savior was a planned manger birth having a home birth with a hospital within 30 minutes of you is a blessing.

I have a podcast episode about my own mental state and how different two of my home births were because I decided to focus Here is the podcast

Affirmations

Affirmations are terrific, but the thing with these is that it trains your mind before birth not during birth. Very rarely do I ever hear, “thank goodness for these affirmations they saved my birth and helped me”. The affirmation is being used while you create them during pregnancy. So make several different kinds. Make a hundred of them during pregnancy. You start to get into the practice of knowing them.

The most underrated affirmations are the ones God has for us. Scripture during home birth is amazing a truly restorative. I love thinking about Jesus' birth during my own birth. I know Jesus is with me.

I hope you found this blog post to be insightful and useful please leave a comment about the things that helped you the most during your natural home birth.
