Noelle, Lily, and Lily's boyfriend Sean all went to high school together. In junior year, Noelle had brought Sean to the prom, and they seemed to be very close. Over the summer though, Lily and Sean had a whirlwind romance and fell in love, and stayed together until Lily's untimely demise. 

In Noelle's diary, she wrote an entry about how Lily was an awful friend to her, lamenting that she had a crush on Sean and had confided to Lily about it. Lily told her to go for it and ask him to the prom. She then went behind Noelle's back and got together with him over the summer, leaving Noelle heartbroken and resentful.
