A capstone is a piece that a high school senior either, composes, conducts, or performes a piece they found or made. The point of doing this is to be able to get a fine arts seal. Student that are in a fine arts program are able to sign up for this challenge and prove what they've learned throughout high school. You need a specific amount of hours, credits, and other requirements but it's definitely worth trying to complete!
My capstone is a medley of my favorite parts in every fall and winter show I've performed in. It's a duet between Marimba and Vibraphone as those are the instrments I've played during my high school expirience. I arranged this piece myself so that I can have a little something to look back on and see how much I've grown. Like looking through photos, everytime a show or clip is played from a preivious year, I'm reminded of all the hardships, laughter, long days, friends, leaders and memories from that time.
It's also one of the first fulls scores I've ever written and so one day, the goal is too look back on this and see how far I've come since now too, not just freshman year!
This piece is a reminder to me that it isn't about the small things but the bigger picture. It isn't about the small parts of a show I liked, it's about how far I've come as not only a musician but a person as well. It's proof that there's been growth, even if others don't notice it, I do and that's all that matters: Is that you see your own growth.
