We study how sublethal death signaling affects cellular behavior and adaptation to stress. During chronic cytotoxic stress exposure, human cells can activate apoptotic processes yet remain alive for weeks or months. We found that this results in myriad changes to cells including DNA damage, mutagenesis, and regulation of inflammatory signaling. We are actively exploring multiple facets of this emerging area of cell biology which may be important for human diseases ranging from cancer to auto-immune disease and aging.

We are also interested in understanding the cellular characteristics which sensitize certain cells to nonapoptotic death, particularly ferroptosis and cuproptosis.

We recently discovered that cells can survive weeks to months of exposure to CD8 T cell attack resulting in sublethal apoptotic signaling. We are currently focused on understanding the mechanisms by which cells survive direct T cell attack and the consequences of this phenomenon.
