The Journal of Applied Security Strategy (JASS), published by the 9L Association, Inc., through its School of Advanced International Policy (SAIP), invites submissions for its inaugural and subsequent issues. JASS is a peer-reviewed publication dedicated to the scholarship of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Petty Officers (POs), as well as research regarding the role of the enlisted force in global security.
Article Types
Research Articles: Comprehensive scholarly works that utilize theoretical frameworks or empirical data to analyze topics in geopolitics, global security strategy, or strategic military affairs.
Strategic Perspectives: Shorter pieces (Perspectives or Sounding Boards) focusing on time-sensitive shifts in the global security landscape or providing professional commentary on military policy.
Field Reports: Analytical accounts of operational experiences that provide broader strategic insights for the international security community.
NCO/PO Scholarship: Research by NCOs or POs on any professional or academic topic of their choosing.
Enlisted Force Analysis: Research by any author (including commissioned officers or academics) regarding the impact of NCOs and POs in global security and geopolitics.
General Submission Guidelines
Eligibility: JASS is exclusively dedicated to the scholarship of NCOs and POs, or scholarship concerning their strategic role.
Word Count: Manuscripts should typically not exceed 5,000 words (excluding tables, figures, and references).
Peer Review: All research papers undergo blind peer review by a board. Non-peer-reviewed submissions (commentaries/perspectives) are reviewed by the Editorial Board for suitability.
Submission Method: Manuscripts must be submitted as MS Word documents to the Editor-in-Chief at https://forms.gle/uzqHa1ohvNCsMZ3u7.
Review Timeline: Authors will typically receive a decision (Accept, Revise/Resubmit, or Reject) within 4–6 weeks.
All submissions must adhere to the following formatting standards:
File Type: Microsoft Word (.docx).
Typography: 12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced.
Margins: 1-inch margins on all sides.
Pagination: Page numbers included in the footer.
Citations: References must follow the 7th Edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Guidelines.
Cover Letter: Include the manuscript title, full names, and organizational affiliations of all authors. Explicitly state if the submission is a Research Article, Strategic Perspective, or Field Report.
Title Page: List the manuscript title and each author’s name, highest academic degree, and current institutional affiliation.
Abstract: A maximum 150-word summary outlining the problem, methodology (if applicable), salient results, and strategic conclusions.
Bio Sketches: A 50–75 word biography for each contributing author, highlighting both academic achievements (e.g., graduate degrees) and operational experience.
Tables and Figures: All visual aids should be placed at the end of the document with clear titles and source citations.
Commentaries are vital for discussing emerging trends or offering professional opinions on security policy.
Sounding Boards: Scholarly pieces offering professional opinions on policy or education issues (Max 3,000 words).
Strategic Perspectives: Brief, accessible discussions on emerging topics in global security (Max 1,500 words).
Letters to the Editor: Comments on recently published JASS articles or novel strategic cases (Max 500 words).
All submissions to the Journal of Applied Security Strategy must represent original work not previously published or under consideration elsewhere. The 9L Association, Inc. maintains the copyright for all published issues.
