Welcome to Social Studies 9! I am looking forward to working with you over the academic year as we focus on historical and contemporary social, cultural, political, legal, economic and environmental issues. We study history to understand and explain why our world is the way it is.
History shows us the mistakes, triumphs, and disasters of societies and how civilizations, ideologies and economic systems succeeded or failed and why. The knowledge you will gain from Social Studies will help you understand the world you live in, learn from those before you, provide you with critical thinking skills and hopefully prepare you for your future as a positively contributing member of society.
The Social Studies 9 Curriculum is comprised of history between 1750 – early 1900’s along with physiographic geography using the “Big 6” Historical Thinking Concepts that focus on critical thinking skills. From geography and economic systems to revolution and colonization, Social Studies covers a diverse range of interesting and important topics. Course content is largely taught from a Catholic worldview. Students will also learn about principles of First Nations learning, especially during units on Canadian and American history.
Essential Question: “How do historical events shape the present and what role do individuals and societies play in influencing change over time?”
