“You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be--I had a Mother who read to me.”
- Excerpt from The Reading Mother by Strickland Gillilan
**Tips for Raising A Reader**
Model reading. Your child looks up to you, and you are their greatest role model. If they see you read, they will want to read too! It doesn’t matter what you read (cereal boxes, books, magazines, the newspaper, etc.) as long as they see you read! If you can’t read the words (because you don’t speak English, for example), no worries. Just look at the pictures and describe what you see (or have your child do this.) The interaction you have with your child bonding over books will create many positive memories.
Get a Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) card for your child (and yourself too!!) These cards are free, and BPL has a much more generous lending policy than I do. There are books in many languages, and as of now, there is no fine for late books.
Check out SORA, the citywide digital library! Log on to your child’s TeachHub account. Find the “SORA” app--there are tons of the BEST books/magazines available to your child in different languages, dyslexic fonts, “read to me” formats, etc.
