Nuovo Cinema Paradiso Director's Cut Review
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is a 1988 Italian-French coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The film tells the story of Salvatore, a successful film director who returns to his native Sicilian village for the funeral of his old friend Alfredo, who was the projectionist at the local cinema during his childhood. Through flashbacks, we see how Salvatore fell in love with movies and with a beautiful girl named Elena, and how Alfredo became his mentor and father figure.
The film was originally released in Italy with a running time of 155 minutes, but it was poorly received by audiences and critics. Tornatore then cut 30 minutes from the film, creating a 123-minute version that was released internationally and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990. However, many fans and critics felt that the shorter version lost some of the charm and depth of the original cut.
