The Gospel According To Mary is a fictional retelling of the stories in the Christian Gospels from the point of view of the women in the story. It focuses more particularly on two of the Marys as they accompany Jesus of Nazareth from his early teachings on the shores of the Sea of Galilee to the accomplishment of his mission on the Cross.
“Two of the Marys?” Yes, for there are several of them in the telling of the life of Jesus, as recorded by the Gospel writers. Prospective readers, if asked to guess who “Mary” is, in the title of this fiction, might fairly immediately plump for either one or the other between Mary of Magdala (if they have read and remember their Dan Brown) or Mary mother of Jesus (if they have been brought up Catholic).
But besides these two, there are Mary mother of James and Joseph, Mary of Bethany, Mary sister of Martha and Lazarus . . . And all, none, or different permutations of these, depending which Gospel writer you turn to, may have been there at the critical moments of the founding of the Christian faith.
So here is my entirely fictional, conjectural, version of how these two (or three, or five) Marys might all fit in. Check the links and the blurbs below for the availability of the four books making up this story. They include my original artwork for the illustrations.

We start on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee, between the towns of Magdala and Capernaum. This is the setting for the overlapping worlds of market traders, farm hands, masters and mistresses, servants, tax collectors . . . and carpenters and fishermen.
Our story now shifts between Jerusalem at the time of Herod the Great and Nazareth three decades later. An old community searches for its future and a new gathering traipses around Galilee looking for its purpose.

The rains are followed by winter on the Sea of Galilee, and the Teacher's messengers scattered along its shores are reunited. And then it transpires that they must go north before things start turning south.

The Teacher and his followers arrive in Jerusalem, our full complement of Marys is to hand, and our story should be rushing to its accomplishment. But some more to-ing and fro-ing is happening before we can find ourselves at the foot of the Cross.
