Kevin Hills shared his research into 26 local Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burials, 23 of which are in the Nanaimo Public Cemetery on Bowen Road.  He discussed his work to have a Nanaimo cemetery bylaw amended to allow those 23 headstones to be reinstalled upright as they originally were, and ultimately to have the CWGC follow through and stand them up again. He has named his effort the Nanaimo Fallen Project.  (Taken from the Nanaimo Historical Society)

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) represents fallen Commonwealth service personnel from both World Wars by marking and memorializing their sacrifice. This includes fallen all over the world who were not only killed in combat, but also who died while training, died of wounds, or even died of natural causes. The social contract made is that they will have a headstone to honour them forever, paid for perpetually by their country.
