Cycladic Amethysts

Project intro:
2800 a.C.
"An amethyst reveals a sedimented chemistry. This occurs through what is seen within the Mind, like a memory during a conversation with a friend. This body of work draws inspiration from the aesthetics of Neolithic Cycladic art, combining artist Alberto Ballocca's impersonal life experiences, natural patterns, and the archaic aesthetic wisdom of pre-Greek peoples."
From the Greek "amethystos" ("not drunk"), as they were believed to protect against drunkenness, amethysts are a variety of crystalline quartz that forms in volcanic cavities. Alberto Ballocca perceives and experiences memories as rays of light bouncing between one crystal and another, confirming his state of sobriety behind the assertion of impersonal memory as an existence that can be experienced without the use of substances, but as part of nature, accessible only through personal memory, aiming to the historical one.
Most of the statuettes, in Cycladic Neolithic art, depict female figures corresponding to the abstraction of natural power of Earth. Many of these are portrayed with arms folded, in the act of self-embracing. Cyclades is a term derived from the Greek kyklos, meaning "cycle," and the position of the islands in the archipelago precisely resembles a circle. I have interpreted the idols' act of self-embracing as the Earth embracing itself, just as each element in nature corresponds to another one, a closed system in recurring natural cycles. With the representation of these natural powers, the Neolithic peoples confirm their ability to observe the cyclical nature of events, from Nature to life and therefore to art representations and technique.
