Cadences are what makes the percussion section important in a band. Cadences are used in between songs to give the band a chance to flip music and to catch their breath. Rudiments

Rudiments are a "rudimentary" part of your training as a percussionist. They are important to learn because they are licks commonly seen in percussion music. Knowing as many rudiments as possible will make sight reading easy and help you learn faster. Some people compare them to scales because they are both very important. Learn your rudiments!
