In 1998 viewers of Britain's Channel 4 television voted for the Beatles as the ultimate music of the millennium. They are perhaps the most obvious example of music having achieved international appeal, providing an enduring symbol of global culture. They were by no means the first popular musicians to achieve international celebrity. Composers such as Hndel and Mozart, and virtuoso performers such as Paganini and Liszt, were known throughout Europe. However genuinely international musical celebrity (as we now think of it) only became possible after the onset of the mass media, especially recording and radio.

Before the Beatles a number of US musicians had become famous around the world and adored by their many fans. Perhaps the most famous of these were the singer Frank Sinatra in the 1940s and the 'King of Rock 'n Roll', Elvis Presley, in the 1950s. In the early 1960s the Beatles became the first rock band to achieve global appeal and the first to make their place of origin a key part of that appeal.

On 9 February 1964, 70 million Americans (60 percent of the US television audience) watched the band on the Ed Sullivan show. That one event not only opened the eyes and hearts of another nation to the four Liverpool musicians, it also triggered a phenomenon now referred to as the British invasion. Before the Beatles few British records reached the US charts. In 1963 just one song out of 114 was a British hit. By 1965 the British invasion had reached its peak and 36 out of 110 songs were by British acts. By 1967 however US tastes had begun to change and the first wave of the British invasion had begun to ebb.

By achieving this kind of success in the US and then across Europe and the rest of the Americas, the Beatles opened the way for other British bands to follow. US tours and hits were achieved by bands like the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, the Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Searchers.

How can the Beatles' global appeal be explained? Popular theories have usually pointed to the genius of the individual members of the band and to fate, luck and destiny. But more critical and scholarly explanations have also emerged.

Others have sought explanations for the social and cultural impact of the Beatles, including their impact on Western popular culture. The band's films, for instance, revived film musicals, and their songs helped popular music of the 1960s to become the soundtrack for political, social and cultural upheaval, particularly in the US.

Of course, a band is nothing without its fans and while, US audiences especially, had screamed at major stars such as Frank Sinatra since the 1940s, Beatles' fandom reached a new level of intensity. For the first time a term was coined by the mass media to describe this reaction, as 'Beatlemania' swept across the States. On occasion the shouts and sobs of teenage girls drowned out the performance and even made it difficult for the group to hear their own music. Even after the Beatles stopped touring ardent crowds stood for hours outside the gates of London's Abbey Road recording studios waiting to catch a glimpse of the band. In a tribute to their devotion George Harrison included a song about them, 'Apple Scruffs', on his first solo album 'All Things Must Pass' (1970).

Hegland called Hedlund to fill the singer's slot for Frisk who had temporarily joined a tour backing band for some extra money for a new guitar amp. The band quickly noticed Hedlund's abilities as both a singer and a frontman. On Frisk's return, they shared lead vocals for a period of time with Frisk singing the more straightforward rockers and Hedlund handling the ballads.

After the group's first single ("Kana Kapila", 1964) the original keyboard player, Hans stlund, was asked to leave because of relations growing sour, especially with Hedlund and founder member Pettersson, who left the band fed up with squabbles. He was asked to rejoin and the band continued as a four piece for a short time in autumn 1964.[5]

Hedlund owned a van and occasionally drove other bands to gigs. One of these bands was Elverkets Spelmanslag so Hedlund saw Benny Andersson performing, making an impression with his quick runs and fill-ins. On Hedlund's suggestion, Andersson was called for an audition. In turn, Andersson had earlier read a tabloid article about the camping car Hep Stars used when touring and which could hold both the band and the equipment. This assured him that Hep Stars had it going along with their assuring comments on the current scene.[6]

The band had become what is considered to be the classic line-up: Sven Hedlund (vocals), Jan Frisk (guitar/vocals), Benny Andersson (keyboards), Lennart Hegland (bass guitar) and Christer Pettersson (drums). The fans were soon to absorb their nicknames Svenne, Janne, Benny, Lelle and Chrille.

Hep Stars recorded their next three singles in one six-hour session without overdubs on three-track equipment.[7]They performed in the TV program Drop In in March 1965. In April, they had three songs in the radio playlist top 4 at the same time: "Cadillac", "Farmer John" and "A Tribute To Buddy Holly". On the sales chart "Cadillac" and "Farmer" peaked at #1 for one week and four weeks respectively, while "Tribute" peaked at #5.[8] Hedlund became the band's figurehead and the first true pop star in Sweden, the band itself being headline material in tabloids and various youth-oriented magazines.

"I Natt Jag Drmde" a Swedish version of "Last Night I Had A Strangest Dream" was a massive hit in Sweden but, being a folk-song, divided the band to a degree. It also caused confusion among rock-oriented fans. The band continued playing up to 200 gigs in 1967. However, problems arose when the backup organisation made a less than adequate job with the tax authorities and in the general running of the business. At the same time, the general economic situation in the country started to stagnate towards the end of the 1960s.

This move contradicted especially with Frisk, who was eventually asked to leave early in 1969 due to diminishing interest. Bjrn Ulvaeus from the Hootenanny Singers stepped in. The original member leaving the band led to mixed feelings, and the decision was made to call it a day after fulfilling the tour contracts. The band played its last gig in August 1969 after which Andersson, Ulvaeus, Walker and Hedlund left the band. It went through several line-up changes before finally breaking up in the early 1970s with Hegland the only original member.

After a break Frisk, Hegland and Pettersson formed Gummibandet and released three albums in the 1970s. In the 1980s, a wave of 1960s nostalgia swept Sweden and the members had a discussion about re-forming the Hep Stars. They made some successful tours with Benneth Fagerlund replacing Andersson on keyboards.[11] In 1990, Hegland stepped down, with Fagerlund following suit a few years later.

Hadi Rezaei, the head of Iran National Records, a committee under the sports ministry, confirmed to Al Jazeera that the feat will first be recorded at a national level before being sent to Guinness World Records for international recognition.

During the tour, the band performed for a range of Angolan government officials, military personnel and members of the general public, including students at the Arts School Complex (CEARTE) Polytechnic Institute of Art in Kilamba, Angola.

As a kid in the early 90's and 00's I loved listening to rock music and being in a band was the coolest thing I could think of. Back in those days I remember seeing and hearing a lot of bands on TV, radio and the internet. These days however, it seems like not many rock bands reach any kind of worldwide big success and a long lasting career in the music business. I'm not sure if I have heard about any rock act selling out stadiums on their own except some old legends from the "good old days"? Has the genre lost its excitement and offered us everything it has to offer? Are new bands just not as good and exciting as older bands? Is the genre left behind in these days of technology where other genres are progressing with better production quality etc.?
