5th Grade Science

In fifth grade, students explore life science, earth science, and physical science. As they learn facts and vocabulary, they develop the ability to ask scientific questions, plan experiments to answer these questions, and develop reasonable explanations based on their observations.

This website was created to ensure that your child has access to the materials that he or she needs in order to be successful in 5th grade science. Please click-on the "Vocabulary" link in the upper right corner for your child's weekly vocabulary words. Please make sure that your child is studying each day to ensure that he or she will develop a sufficient understanding of the words needed to pass tests and the 5th Grade Science End-Of-Grade (EOG) Exam. Vocabulary represents one of most important skills necessary for teaching and learning any language. It is the basis for the development of all the other skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking, writing, spelling and pronunciation. Use the "Notes" link to keep up with the class PowerPoints and notes covered in class, worksheets, and a variety of interactive websites.  The "Textbook" link will give your child access to sections of the text we will use in class. I also provide a "Videos" section to help students review the material covered in class. This website provides your child with different and enriching mediums through which he or she can use to learn 5th grade science.

Below are the Essential Standards for 5th grade students in North Carolina. The Essential Standards, Unpacking Standards, Crosswalks, Graphic Organizers, and a Glossary of Terms can be found on the Department of Public Instruction website.

Parents can use technology to actively participate in their child's education without being visible in the school. School webpages, e-mail, online gradebooks, and educational websites help parents and teachers take advantage of technologies to bridge the communication gap and build family-school partnerships.
