Module 1 is all about place value! We learn to easily multiply and divide by powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000) using a place value chart!
Since each column in the place value chart is x10 larger than the column to its right, multiplying by 10 means moving one column.
Imagine $30. If you multiply $30 by 10, the amount is INCREASING. It's getting 10 TIMES larger. You know that $30 x 10 = $300!
It works the same when multiplying by 100, 1000, or even larger powers of 10!
3.452 x 1000
An easy way to remember that 1000 is the same as THREE column jumps, is that 1000 has THREE zeros!
It's the same as multiplying by ten THREE times!
But, what about DIVISION?!
Let's think about that $30 again. If you have to divide $30 among your 10 friends, will you each end up with MORE than $30 or LESS THAN $30? Right! You'll each end up with MUCH less! You'll only have $3 each!
We also learn several different ways to WRITE numbers!
Word Form = seventeen and forty-six hundredths
Standard Form = 17.46
Expanded Form = 1 x (10) + 7 x (1) + 4 x (0.1) + 6 x (0.01)
Unit Form = 1746 hundredths
