Second Runner up - 5G Innovation Hackathon 2025
The project, “Crime Investigation using Camera-Mounted Rover and VR with 5G,” won the Second Runner-Up position in the highly competitive 5G Innovation Hackathon 2025 (Academia/Student Category), organized by the Department of Telecommunications. The team included members Vivek Mukundan and Tanmay Joyashi (Second-Year, Communication Systems) and was led by Dr. E.S. Gopi, Professor, Department of ECE. The award was presented during the IMC 2025 (India Mobile Congress) on October 9, 2025, by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications and Minister of Rural Development. This preliminary prototype uses a camera-mounted rover and a Virtual Reality (VR) interface connected over a private 5G network to enable remote, real-time forensic inspections. The system is designed to overcome the shortage of trained forensic experts and eliminate the risk of evidence contamination, with potential for use in search and rescue, and border surveillance, directly supporting the Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission through indigenous high-technology development.
Projects:
Project 1 (PG) : Machine Learning for Gesture Recognition using Arcnet V5 VR and Hyper-IMU Android App
Project 2 (PG) : 5G-Enabled Rover Control System Using Evaluation board for remote teleoperation and LIDAR-BASED MAPPING
Project 3 (UG): Implementation of Semantic communication using 5G Network

MDCWC 2026 Workshop was conducted from April 13–17, 2026, organized by Dr. E. S. Gopi, Professor/ECE, as coordinator and speaker. The workshop hosted 35 participants from various institutions in a hybrid mode. The curriculum comprised five invited talks delivered by experts, two insightful case studies, and a guided visit to the 5G Use Case Lab. These activities provided participants with valuable hands-on exposure and practical insights into emerging 5G technologies.
