Assessment has always been at the heart of language learning, but the ways we test and support learners have changed dramatically over time. Our Movable Feast explores this evolution across three stages.
By tracing where we were, where we are, and where we’re going, our Moveable Feast highlights how mobility and AI are reshaping language learning assessment into something more continuous, adaptive, and personal.
Where We Were (Historical): From grammar drills, vocabulary lists, and standardized testing, to the communicative approaches that aligned with frameworks like the CEFR. These methods emphasized accuracy and recall, but often left learners stressed or excluded.
Where We Are (Present): With the rise of mobile apps, assessment is woven into daily practice through short, gamified tasks, instant feedback, and adaptive review. Tools like Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, and Babbel make practice more engaging and accessible, while also raising questions about depth and authenticity.
Where We’re Going (Future): AI promises to turn practice into assessment itself—pinpointing errors, offering retries, and adapting on the spot. This future holds both risks (corporate control, homogenization) and opportunities (cultural preservation, personalization, emerging tools like AR).
