Northwest Streams Tell All:
Findings from 25 Years of Measuring Sticks and Stones
Speaker: Christine Hirsch & Klynn Shelton
Abstract: Almost 30 years ago, the Forest Service and Bureau and Land Management made a dramatic change in how they did business – shifting from a focus on timber production to managing forests for preserving salmon and other species at risk of extinction through the infamous Northwest Forest Plan. But did it work? This talk will share the results of over 20 years of monitoring the streams of the Pacific Northwest to answer that question combining techniques ranging from environmental DNA to satellite imagery and, yes, measuring 144,869 sticks and 787,797 stones. The protections included in the Northwest Forest Plan began one of the largest passive stream restoration efforts on the planet.
