Life Lessons I’ve Learned from Harry Potter
By Mr. Pratt
Avada Kadavra! This is the killing curse in Harry Potter. However, today we will be talking about life… not death. I am going to tell you some life lessons I have learned from Harry Potter. Let’s get started!
The first lesson I learned from Harry Potter is that good friends can get you through just about anything in life. Harry had his friends Ron and Hermione. The friends helped him through many challenges during his schooling. They even helped him defeat Lord Voldemort. Good friends are pretty amazing.
The next life lesson I learned is the old adage, “Never judge a book by its cover.” I say this because there were a lot of surprising twists in Happy Potter. For example, Severus Snape, who appears evil throughout the whole series, turns out to be sacrificing everything, including his life, for the one person he loved. Or, Neville Longbottom, the nerdiest kid of the class, ends the story as the hero after he is the one to kill Nagini. We should never judge a person based on looks alone. Take the time to get to know them.
The final lesson I want to talk about surrounds the theme of money. We know that money is what makes the world go around, but money is not everything. Harry sees all walks of life. The Dursleys never give him money, and they treat him horribly even though he is family. Harry is miserable. When he first goes to Hogwarts, he learns that he has a vault full of gold, but it still can’t buy him the one thing he actually wants in life. When he looks into the Mirror or Erised, what does he see? His family. You can have all the money in the world, but if you’re not surrounded by people who love you, then what do you really have?
So you can see from this, even though Harry Potter is a fictional story, there is a lot we can learn from it. The three lessons I talked about today were about good friends, not judging, and how important our life relationships are. Got it? Now, no more Avada Kadavras… Get out there and start living your life!
