I recently purchased a new mobile phone and it got me thinking. Do we still need to create mobile phone friendly websites? The primary reason I ask this is because it has a screen that is full 1080p HD. That is the same resolution as my 46 inch home TV! With that kind of resolution which is higher than most laptops, it has no problem displaying even the smallest text on websites designed for desktops. It also has an octa-core CPU and 4GB of RAM too, so complex sites with lots of large images, videos and power hungry scripts aren't an issue.

It is essential that your website works properly on mobile devices but as their screen resolutions and power get higher and closer to laptops and desktops, perhaps what they display shouldn't be so different.

80% of internet users own a smartphone so they are an important factor for anyone with a website, but 89% of their time is spent using dedicated apps like social media, messaging or gaming compared to 11% web browsing [2]. On first glance that doesn't seem particularly high until you learn that by the end of October 2016, mobile devices had overtaken desktops for internet usage worldwide. 51.3% of all internet traffic was due to mobile devices. In the UK it is still slightly behind at 44.4%. The USA has a slightly bigger gap at 42% for mobile devices [3]. The important thing is that the trend shows mobile usage going up.

The shear quantity of information you can get on the screen isn't the only consideration for a mobile friendly website. People use their mobile devices on the move and need to be able to view the contents while on the go. Tiny text and crushed up contents just won't cut it. If your visitors can't see the information they need easily, they will simply go elsewhere.

These are just a few things that could mean your desktop website isn't okay for mobile users. So, to answer the question I posed above - YES, we still definitely need mobile friendly websites. With that in mind, there are at least a couple of other things to consider which may save you time and improve your users journey through your online presence.

The first hand-held mobile phone call actually took place way back in 1973 (by Motorola - the same people who made my new phone) but the first commercially available mobile phone wasn't available until 1983 (also from Motorola) [5]. It took until 1999 before the first phone with an internet browser appeared but it couldn't display normal HTML web sites, only specially created WAP websites (Wireless Application Protocol) [6]. These supported far fewer features as the phones just could not cope with anything too complex. Believe me, I know what a pain it was to create duplicate websites using the WML language (Wireless Markup Language), especially when it came to debugging.

The days of needing a separate website just for mobile devices is long gone and having to maintain two sites should be avoided in my opinion. It saves time if you just need to update one site that works nicely no matter what device it is viewed on. It doesn't even take much effort any more as all of the popular content management systems (CMS) have mobile optimised themes available or you can build a custom one yourself without too much effort.

An alternative would be to have fixed widths set up so that your site 'snaps' to the next available size which will fit the device. You could get away with just a couple of fixed widths - one for large screens and one for mobile screens but with the wide variety of display resolutions available this probably isn't enough. Most people go for at least three main sizes which you could think of as being for desktops, tablets (or smart phones held in landscape orientation), and mobiles. Personally, I like to create sites which are 960 pixels wide for desktops, around 700 pixels for tablets and around 320 pixels for phones. Obviously these are a personal choice but they tend to work for me with the vast majority of display sizes without having too much of a border on most devices. The way the pages are displayed is purely down to the stylesheets so the content and delivery of the pages remains the same, it is just down to the web browser to render the page using the appropriate CSS styles. This way you can increase the size of buttons on the smallest display size, for example. If you search for recommended web site widths you will find lots of common sizes people choose. ff782bc1db
