Aquamarine Fukushima launched the Coelacanth Project in 2000 just after opening to conduct research on coelacanths. To date, we have conducted surveys on the extant species, Latimeria chalmunae and L. menadoensis using ROVs as well as dissections of the two species and studies on fossil coelacanths.
In addition, we held the First International Coelacanth Symposium in February 2002, participated in the South African Coelacanth International Symposium in October 2003, held the International Symposium “The Coelacanth, Fathom the Miystery” in November 2007; and co-hosted the International Coelacanth Symposium with the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History in August 2017.
