The purpose of this challenge is to raise funds and awareness for Down syndrome (or trisomy 21), a condition in which a person's genome carries an extra 47th chromosome, instead of the usual 46.
My little sister was born with this, and I remember how hard it was for her and my family. Even the simplest things we take for granted such as being able to feed yourself, talk or even walk were ten times more difficult for her.
However, every single day, she persevered, working that much harder. Through years of occupational, physical, and speech therapy she grew so much smarter and stronger with each passing day. Today, she is a gymnast, a dancer, and quite the socialite.
In honor of her, and every kid who goes through a similar struggle, I created this challenge, as a testament to the hard work that they and their families went through; pushing their minds and bodies to the limit to help provide them with a better life. Through this challenge, and the generosity of the people who support it, I want to help this organization that has helped thousands of families connect, navigate, and celebrate their struggle.
That is why we run 47K.
In July 2023, we did the very first 47K challenge, where 8 different runners in the Chicagoland area, each ran a total distance of 47 kilometers across a period of one week.
Inspired by the Tinley Park 5K Donut Run and as a part of the GigiFit Acceptance Challenge, we raised a grand total of $1,000 for Gigi's Playhouse's Tinley Park location.

On April 19th, 2025, I will run 47 kilometers along the Chicago Lakefront Trail to raise money for Best Buddies Illinois. Over the past couple of years, this organization has helped so many people with special needs across the U.S. find employment, a sense of community, and build genuine friendships.
My little sister, Ella, has been a part of this club for 2-3 years and looks forward to it every week. It's helped her make so many fantastic friends, make some fun memories, and of course, the snacks don't hurt :)
I want to help provide them with the funding to continue expanding their reach and running these after school clubs and job placement programs across the U.S., to help more people's sisters and brothers find that same sense of community and support.
