4451 is for rest, relaxation, respite, and recreation. Located near Little River, 45 minutes drive from Christchurch, we offer our facilities to groups who want to share a space together for a day or a weekend or longer. Individuals and families are welcome too! We especially enjoy hosting people who might not otherwise get a chance to 'get away from it all'. Uses of our facilities have included:
Neighbourhood community weekends
Family getaways
Leadership retreats
Weddings (good weather only!)
Mother-daughter getaways
Birthday parties
School camps
Family reunions
Personal time out
Father-son weekends
Retirement home outings
Silent retreats
Your hosts are Ian and Kathy Viney.
You can also see our Facebook page here.
The Opuahou Stream runs through the property.
The Barn is a space in which to hang out, discuss life or share a meal. It has kitchen facilities.
There is plenty for kids to enjoy.
Kererū Cabin and Pīwakawaka Cabin accommodate up to six people each.
Korimako Cottage is self-contained with two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom.
Matuku Moana Container House has a queen bed, plus room for another mattress. It contains a bathoom with toilet, basin and hot shower.
Tūī Chapel is set aside as a quiet place for meditation, reflection or prayer.
The George Searle Cabin has a single bed. That's all. Oh, and a light and a heater and a power plug and a tiny table.
There is Wi-Fi available across most of the property (except inside the Matuku Moana container). The network name is Aaron Stewart Builders and the password is 0800838383 (remember Pizza Hut?!?). Our satellite internet is supplied by Starlink, which has good speeds but occasionally has outages, usually only for a few seconds but sometimes for a few minutes. It's fine for watching Netflix.
Mobile phone coverage is good for Spark, Skinny, One NZ and 2Degrees (we think). However, One NZ coverage in the Matuku Moana container is poor.
If you'd like to use 4451, either for a day visit or to stay, please contact Ian Viney (ian@viney.net.nz or facebook.com/messages/t/ian.viney or 021 1538898) and we can discuss what would suit your needs. You can view the Booking calendar to get an idea of when the site is available.
There is no charge for using the facilities: we are happy to make them available as a service to the community. We'd like everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy being here, and we don't want money to get in the way of that. But if you're in a position do so, a donation is appreciated so we can improve the property for the benefit of future guests – our bank account number is 03-1905-0099468-000; the name on the account is Ian Viney.
Young people are welcome, but any visiting group needs to have at least one adult accompanying them.
Our address is 4451 Christchurch Akaroa Road, Little River, 7591. This is State Highway 75, the road from Christchurch to Akaroa. Google Maps knows where we are!
Our gate is about 50m on the left past the Allied Garage just before Cooptown, about 2km past the Little River village. It can be difficult to see at night. It's about 3m past the horse sign!
Our front gate. 😀
An autumn view from our front gate, looking up the road towards Cooptown. Akaroa is 30 mins up this road.
