Losing or lost?
If you stumbled upon this, dont tell the admins. You know they dont like it when people talk about this sorta stuff. I doubt they'd do much but junk the file, but I'd like to have somewhere I can write my grievances.
At what point do people realize the inevitable and give up. People are tired. Everyday they're out there it's the same. Friends die. Some go "missing". Inch by inch, light year by light year, system by system, humanity is dying. You'd think if we had a chance we'd have stomped out those bugs by now. We wouldn't have lost so much to them. We wouldn't be getting closed in on all sides. We wouldn't be where we are now. I've been dragged back from the brink by field medics more times then I can count. I've felt death wear at me again and again and I just can't feel anymore. Is this the miracle of medicine? That my apathy towards death leads me onward despite lacking any good reason to do so? Regardless, it's not my main concern right now, thats for next nymph or soldier to decide when it wants to put a bullet through my chestplate. Maybe it'll score a good shot and finally put me down instead of just breaking another rib from the force on my armor.
The others keep talking about the knights too, them and their shining armor. They're pretty, sure, and they've no doubt proven themselves in combat, but so few people can only do so much heavy lifting. Whats the rumored stats, down 3 knights already? It takes the corruption a good fucking while, hell it took them 2 years to get their first one, but even a knight in the company of their squad can die.
Some still mention Mars.
To many, Mars was a light in the dark, proof that humanity would ultimately prevail. They saw the victory at mars as a symbol of our defiance of fate, that we could overcome and defeat the corruption.
I let them hold onto their hope, keeps people happy. Means I wont be so lonely out on the field since people keep opting onto the legion to fight the good fight and "help save humanity". I also just don't think I'd like to see people have their hope ripped out of them. Its not right, not fair.
For those like myself, They see Mars for what it is. A long grueling battle that took countless lives and a miracle to win. A battle we nearly lost, taking place right on the doorstep of earth. We managed to push them back, but only out of the solar system. They chose to go back to the edge by themselves, probably to recover. Everyone knew we couldn't follow them to finish the job, not in the state we were in.
No.
We've already lost. The time to wipe those bugs out was early on, before they got their hands on our gear, our tech, our ships. Before we knew what we were dealing with. It was hopeless from the start. They were able to keep quiet until they were strong enough to fight, and when they made themselves apparent, it was too late to stop the snowball from rolling. It'd already been rolling for a mile by that point.
And so Im called upon once again. Called to walk out of a drop ship onto a battlefield and fight. Not much better to do. Maybe I can give the civvies back at home a few more moments to live happier lives then mine. I don't want to break their hope.
