Anatomy- and physiology-based science outreach for K-12 and post-secondary students is a significant component of the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiology mission at Indiana University School of Medicine. The department offers group tours of the gross anatomy laboratory, skeletal and anatomical model collections, physiology laboratories and non-human and fossil comparative and functional skeletal collections upon request for authorized educational organizations.

This two-hour gross anatomy lab experience begins with a 30-minute introduction to cadaveric gross anatomy and covers the history of cadaveric dissection. This tour allows students to learn more about how medical schools obtain cadavers and how they are used to educate physicians and other health care professionals. Following the introductory talk, students have an opportunity to work through a series of cadaveric activity stations in the gross lab. Each station emphasizes a different part of the human anatomy, including the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and digestive system. Students have an opportunity to interact and engage with cadaveric specimens following the guidance and instruction of our medical educators and education graduate students.

Although cadaver-based lab tours are limited to high-school students and above, IU School of Medicine offer comparable non-cadaveric experiences for K-8 students. These tours provide students with hands-on experience with human skeletal materials, anatomical models, preserved sheep organs (brain, heart, lungs etc.), an extensive non-human and fossil comparative skeletal collection as well as exposure to an extensive collection of great ape and fossil human replica casts. Similar to the advanced tours, these tours for elementary and middle-school students can be easily customized for the different curricular needs of individual student groups. Potential topics include but are not limited to:

The Zygote Solid 3D Human Anatomy Model Collection is the most comprehensive and medically accurate solid 3D human body anatomy model available. Trusted by companies like Google and NASA, the entire anatomy collection was created using high-quality CT and MRI scans. Our anatomy models are perfect for engineering and design of orthopedics and medical devices as well as finite element analysis and simulations. If your project requires accurate medical CAD models, the Zygote Human Body Collection contains everything you need. The collection works with all major modeling softwares including:

Every designer and engineer that has interacted with the human body or its anatomy will quickly find that the Zygote Complete Human Anatomy Collection is the most accurate and bug-free anatomical model available today.

Zygote's anatomy products are a core element in most of the projects we are involved with, none more so than DK's The Complete Human Body where they take center stage in the book's amazing Anatomy Atlas.

Medi-Mation has been working with Zygote's anatomical models since they were first launched--it's been a pleasure to see the assets develop in detail and accuracy over time. Compared to other commercially available products, Zygote's models are far cleaner and more detailed, making them wonderful assets from which to build illustrations and animation. We look forward to seeing where future iterations will take them.

For The Complete Human Body, Medi-Mation required a highly detailed and clean set of models. These formed the basis of the illustrations for the book, which explores every aspect of the body in incredible detail. Some views are 80 percent life-size. The clear, sensible labeling of assets and clean geometry allowed us to divide the model and add even more detail without any problems, even with all anatomy layers loaded in at the same time.

Zygote's model sets saved us a huge amount of time and effort, making complex and high profile projects such as The Complete Human Body feasible in terms of both production and budget.

A study was undertaken to determine the dimensional accuracy of anatomical replicas derived from X-ray 3D computed tomography (CT) images and produced using the rapid prototyping technique of stereolithography (SLA). A dry bone skull and geometric phantom were scanned, and replicas were produced. Distance measurements were obtained to compare the original objects and the resulting replicas. Repeated measurements between anatomical landmarks were used for comparison of the original skull and replica. Results for the geometric phantom demonstrate a mean difference of +0.47 mm, representing an accuracy of 97.7-99.12%. Measurements of the skull produced a range of absolute differences (maximum +4.62 mm, minimum +0.1 mm, mean +0.85 mm). These results support the use of SLA models of human anatomical structures in such areas as pre-operative planning of complex surgical procedures. For applications where higher accuracy is required, improvements can be expected by utilizing smaller pixel resolution in the CT images. Stereolithographic models can now be confidently employed as accurate, three-dimensional replicas of complex, anatomical structures.

The waxes from Bologna created by Lelli, with reference to Osteology and Myology, together with those of the sensory organs, bowels and obstetric parts produced by the Manzolinis, probably constitutes the oldest known collection of wax anatomical models.

Acclaim for the Florentine wax modelling workshop soon spread throughout Europe. Emperor Joseph II, on arriving in Florence with the eminent surgeon Brambilla, was so impressed by the collection of wax anatomical models that he commissioned an even larger collection for the Military Academy of Medicine and Surgery he had founded in Vienna. In 1786, the collection was delivered to Vienna by mule and is still today preserved in the Josephinum Palace.

The widespread availability of high-performance computing and popularity of simulations stimulated the development of computational anthropomorphic models of the human anatomy for medical imaging modalities and dosimetry calculations. The widespread interest in molecular imaging spurred the development of more realistic three- to five-dimensional computational models based on the actual anatomy and physiology of individual humans and small animals. These can be defined by either mathematical (analytical) functions or digital (voxel-based) volume arrays (or a combination of both), thus allowing the simulation of medical imaging data that are ever closer to actual patient data. The paradigm shift away from the stylized human models is imminent with the development of more than 30 voxel-based tomographic models in recent years based on anatomical medical images. We review the fundamental and technical challenges of designing computational models of the human anatomy, and focus particularly on the latest developments and future directions of their application in the simulation of radiological imaging systems and dosimetry calculations.

Check out the Visible Body Human Anatomy Atlas available electronically from UNE Library Services! With this comprehensive 3D atlas of the human body you can explore interactive 3D models of the human body and access a collection of more than 100 medical animations to review physiology topics and common pathologies.

Each affordable anatomy model is removable from its base and comes with a one- or two-sided, color key card. Most models are for general anatomical study; however, the artery, breast, colon, liver, skin cancer, and stomach models also depict pathologies.

JoVE Core Anatomy and Physiology showcases the anatomical and physiological details of the human body in comprehensive, clear, and engaging video animations. This collection of lessons focuses on the structures, components, functions, and requirements of the human body. It is complemented by scientist-in-action videos that demonstrate the application of this knowledge in real-world medical and research settings.

It is thought to have been made by the French physician and modelmaker, Louis Auzoux in the nineteenth century. These models were made from papier mch, a new technique for the time, and highlighted veins, arteries and nerves with fabric covered wires. Anatomical models such as these were created in the nineteenth century in lieu of available corpses for dissection. In order to gain practical and working knowledge of the human anatomy, Auzoux created these models, often including removeable organs in order to mimic the process of dissection. These models became internationally renowned and feature in medical museum collections around the world.

The researchers found that the representation of the human form in anatomy textbooks remains predominantly male, except within the sections about reproductive anatomy. Moreover, the researchers found that in comparison to studies conducted over two decades ago, the representation of females in anatomy textbooks has only improved by four percentage points.

The Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology is one of Australia's largest collections of human tissue specimens, animal anatomy specimens, and historical anatomical models, offering students and researchers a unique insight into the human body. Although the museum is not normally open to the public, tours of the museum are available for biology and medical professionals and students. be457b7860
