Smart building technology makes the design process easy. As you draw walls, the program creates a 3D model simultaneously. Ceilings and floors form automatically and the program generates a materials list that continually updates along with the design. When you add windows and doors, they automatically insert into walls creating the openings and framing. Cabinets bump to walls, countertops merge, and cabinets update when placing fixtures and appliances. Need client design options? Use the Style Palette tool to transform the look of a room with colors, materials, and architectural elements.

What sets architects apart from other people who design homes is that they are licensed by the states in which they practice. To obtain a license, an architect generally must earn a degree from an approved architectural program, complete an internship, and pass an exam. All of this ensures architects possess a high level of expertise about design, materials, and building systems.

Many builders also offer home design services, and some offer the services of a dedicated, on-staff designer. Design-build firms offer both architectural design and construction services under one roof; some are led by architects, and some have architects on staff.

A draftsperson puts your plans on paper. They can produce the drawings you will need to build, but usually only after the design is established. Like designers, drafters often work alongside licensed architects or builders.

When you make the decision to build a custom home you are almost definitely going to hire an architect to take on your project. Today we are going to review the role of the architect in the custom home design and construction process.

Like the custom builder you choose for your home, the architect plays a vital role in many aspects of home design and development. So you want to take your time to research and interview a variety of candidates to find the right one. So we are also going to outline a list of questions to ask the architects you are considering, and why this information is important to understand about each candidate.

Another important role that the architect can play, which you may not consider in the inital construction process, is checking the project throughout each construction phase to ensure the plans they created are implemented by the builder and sub-contractors. Architect Lee Calisti says this is actually the phase where you need your architect most. There are a variety of reasons for this including:

If you have been following our Building a Custom Home blog series you know that the first step to getting started is making a list. A list of everything you want, love, dream about or have to have in your new custom home.

Reputable architects should be enthusiastic about referring to you to past projects. It shows both a high level of pride in their work, and a strong ability to develop good relationships with their clients over the long process of building a custom home.

Architecture firms could be 1-2 senior partners working in a small team, or it can consist of dozens of principals, partners, assistants, interior designers and CAD professionals all working synonymously to create your home plans. Depending on your personality a smaller, more intimate firm may be more important to you, or a large team of professionals may better meet your needs in the grand scheme of the type of home you are building. Your desired participation level may also play a role here. If you want to be on site everyday having a small, personal firm may better meet your needs. If you are hands-off or building far away from your primary residence you may want a larger firm that can provide with more support during the various stages.

Architect, Mark Demerly refers to the AIA Owner Architect Agreement which outlines, in detail, overall project requirements, project tasks and responsibilities, schedule requirements, identify compensation for the architect and understand if the project scope is realistic.

Although architects do add extra cost to the project, there are plenty of examples that prove that hiring one can also save you money See some example presented by Rand Soeliner of Home Architects of the ways he can save his clients thousands of dollars by careful home design and construction planning, something architects are uniquely trained to do.

Architects can play an important role in the building process and ensure your dreams are effectively communicated and executed to all parties involved. Take the time to educate yourself and understand every aspect of the professional architects you are considering.

Clinton Cole, architect, builder, and director at CPlusC Architectural Workshop, gave Welcome to the Jungle House, his family's home in suburban Sydney, the eco-friendly treatment, what with a solar-panel facade, rainwater harvesting, and a rooftop full of fruits and vegetables and a fish pond. Visitors are first ushered into the imposing steel "shroud" entry, facing the timber-clad staircase.

A single Japanese red pine tree provided the impetus to build this spartan, three-story dwelling and office designed by architect Go Fujita of Gosize in Nishinomiya, known as a prime site for Japanese cherry blossom sightings. Fashioned almost entirely of concrete, it has high ceilings and full walls that make way for select materials including tin, oak, and silver foil.

On a plateau three hours outside Mexico City, architect Fernanda Canales created a wild, nature-fueled vacation home for her family surrounding four courtyards. Celebrating the flat, rugged environs, she melded a facade of red, broken brick with warm concrete and wood interiors. To add extra height, she turned to terra-cotta tiled barrel vaults.

At midcentury-style Pavilion Haus in Houston, the home of StudioMET Architects principal and partner Shawn Gottschalk, Gottschalk ensured that kids could play freely in the contained courtyard while parents kept watch through the sleek glass panels. A large pedestrian gate doubling as the front door establishes a dialogue with nature found throughout the pavilion.

Befitting of the 1960s, architect Charles Bello and his wife built a sustainable ranch in Mendocino County, California, using materials obtained solely from their 400-acre plot of redwood forest. The site's showstopper is undoubtedly the undulating glass house, nestled inside a cluster of trees.

In the Brisbane suburb of Paddington, architect Scott Petherick converted a 1920s structure into Jacaranda House, a "Queenslander"-inspired home for his family on the upper level, with his workshop below. In addition to striking woodwork and filigree upward-sloping eaves that filter sunlight into the kitchen, there are perks like an intimate courtyard and alfresco fireplace.

In Grey Lynn, an Auckland suburb, architect Richard Naish shook up the notion of the Victorian villa that is pervasive here by building a trifecta of pavilions separated by courtyards and "garden rooms."
