In the 3d version of the game, there are 6 regular 2d game boards stacked on top of each other.
To place a piece in a higher board, the normal four in a row rules apply within that board, AND there must be a piece in the same spot in the board below.
Four In a Row wins can be in the normal patterns within a board as well as across boards.
Q: How does the 3D mode work?
A: In 3D mode, you play on a 6x6x7 cube. You can place your piece in any column on any of the four faces. The goal is still to get four of your pieces in a row, but now lines can go horizontally, vertically, or diagonally through the cube's depth, or even diagonally across a single face. Think in three dimensions!
Q: How do I play multiplayer?
A: Multiplayer uses Apple's Game Center. Tap the "Multiplayer" button. You can either invite a friend directly through Game Center or use matchmaking to find an available opponent online. Make sure you are logged into Game Center on your device.
Q: Can I play offline?
A: Yes! Select "Single Player" from the main menu to play against the computer AI.
Q: How do I change the AI difficulty?
A: In the Single Player settings (usually accessed before starting a game or via a settings icon), you can select different AI opponents representing various difficulty levels.
Q: How do Hints work?
A: Hints are available in Single Player mode against the AI. If you're stuck, tapping the Hint button will suggest a possible move for you. Use them sparingly to learn strategy!
Q: What are Achievements and Leaderboards?
A: These are features integrated with Game Center. Achievements are awarded for completing specific challenges in the game (like winning a 3D match or beating a tough AI). Leaderboards track your high scores or win counts against other players worldwide for both single-player and multiplayer modes.

My friend and I created the 3D version of this game in college in 2003. We were bored in class and would play connect four on paper during class, but got so good they would always end in draws. The 3D version really adds a lot of additional complexity and strategy. I vibe-coded this version using Cursor AI with Claude 3.7 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. I have never seen or written swift code before, and wrote less than 50 lines of code, mostly where it really wanted to change the rules of the 3D game. Enjoy!
