November 2023
In the 21 months of 35 pokes, Boltund was only rolled twice in November2023 and August 2024. In it's inital month of November, people experimented with choice band sets in an attempt to take advantage of it's good speed stat, while making up for it's lacking attack stat. However even with choice band it lacked good enough damage output to be worth using, comparably to the other threats that month which could annihilate teams with a single turn of set up. Boltund also had a bad match up into many of these threats, lacking any real way to hit them or to force them out, and it did not really have any match ups that were consistent enough to make it worth using, which led to it hardly carving out even a niche. It exclusively stopped Swoobat sweeps, but it was bad into everything else; Kingdra, Scolipede, and Slurpuff all ran through it. On top of all this, Typhlosion the premier choice scarf user, outclassed Boltund as a speedy revenge killer, and hit much harder than it with its stab eruption. Apart from being massive competition, Modest choice scarf typhlosion could revenge kill Boltund with eruption, which not many Pokemon want to even switch into. These factors in conjunction with each other made November a very rough initial month for Boltund.
August 2024
After November, Boltund would not be rolled again for a whopping 9 months. After it's long hiatus it was finally rolled for a second time for August 2024. Initially, people saw Boltund as a Pokemon with a good speed stat, but being far too easy to switch into to take advantage of it's speed, which made it quite the momentum sink. However, after some tinkering around, players found that choice band could be quite effective on teams. Boltund was by no means a wall breaker, struggling against the ground types in the tier being Mamoswine, Quagsire, Runerigus, Donphan, and the Electric Immune Lanturn. However using partners who demand similar switch ins alongside Boltund, allowed them to form aggressive overload cores. The premier wall breakers of the tier, Heracross & Scizor both paired well with Boltund with their ability to force in ground types and chunk their health or/& pivot on them respectively. Fezandipiti is another notable partner, even though most sets are as defensive as possible to deal with Heracross, you can instead rely on the combination of Toxic Chain and beat up to spread Toxic on ground types switching in. Lanturn and Alolan-Muk serve similar roles to this, as they can potentially toxic or chunk an incoming ground type for Boltund, and Lanturn can also serve as a way to slow pivot Boltund onto the field. Once you chip down your checks, Boltund can start hitting virtually everything in the tier pretty hard. It can even threaten non electric immune checks like Chesnaught with psychic fangs. Boltund usually ran one of two sets, choice band for more immediate power, or bulk up to try to make up for it's low base attack stat. Choice band was the more popular one because of it's consistency, however bulk up still did amazing in Quagsireless games. All of this led to Boltund managing to get a respectable B rank on the August2024 Viability Rankings. Boltund was definitely not a top Pokemon, but it had a good run for sure.
