The origins of the Institute of Geography date back to 1947, when it was conceived as a Geographical Studies Section dependent on the Institute of History and Auxiliary Disciplines. The students of the History and Geography teachers constituted the initial nucleus in the training stage from 1947 to 1955. These pioneers presented the proposal for a publication that they called: Geographic Studies Bulletin.
The period of consolidation and successful theoretical-methodological contributions is between 1955 and 1976. This space projected the image of the researcher with a deep vocation for scientific knowledge and the search for improvement in his specific area of knowledge. Later, other theoretical frameworks and technical instruments consistent with the new orientations that emerged in the middle of the century were incorporated.
Later, Research Centers emerged. Those who share their experiences in the region showing specific themes of this science. Today, our centers are: CETEM (Center for Territorial Strategies for Mercosur) and CCMA (Center for Environmental Mapping).
Currently, the members of the Institute carry out research that involves various conceptual frameworks, among the topics addressed are: disaster risk management, geography and health, environmental history, political ecology, problems of wine producers, geomorphological heritage, application of geotechnologies, environmental education , urban marginality, land market, among many others.
The Geography degree began in Mendoza in 1947. It emerged as the Geographical Studies Section dependent on the Institute of History and Auxiliary Disciplines of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, National University of Cuyo.
The general objectives of the Department are:
Coordinate, advise and promote spaces for integration in didactic, pedagogical and conceptual matters between the different teaching teams that make up each Department.
Support and collaborate in the transfer of everything that derives from teaching, management, extension and research activities.
