Isaiah 11:1-4
The Branch From Jesse
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD -
3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
2 Samuel 7:12-13
A Grandson of David
12 When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Luke 20:41-47
Whose Son Is the Christ?
41 Then Jesus said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is the Son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
" 'The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet." ' 44 David calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?"
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."
Luke 18:35-43
A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight
35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."
38 He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 "What do you want me to do for you?"
"Lord, I want to see," he replied.
42 Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you." 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
St. Matthew writes on different occasions that Jesus was called the Son of David...Samuel wrote that God said David would have an offspring that would establish the throne of His Kingdom forever...Jesse was the father of David...The Prophet Isaiah said their would be One who would come from the lineage of Jesse and be One who would have the Spirit of the LORD on Him...The Son of David is a Messianic Title...Jesus is this shoot from Jesse's lineage...Jesus is the Messiah...But not everyone recognized Jesus as the Messiah, or the Son of David...Not everyone could see and believe who He was and is...
Jesus tells us that He is the Son of David -the One that was to come...When David wrote in the Psalms, Jesus says it is about Him...God said to Jesus or the LORD said to my LORD, sit at my right hand...David is acknowledging that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God, as well as the future Son of David...David is declaring in the Psalm that the Messiah is coming...Jesus confirms that He is the One that was to come, by explaining what David meant in his writings...
Not everyone realized or believed that Jesus is the Messiah...In fact, there are people today, who do not believe He was the One to come from the Old Testament Scriptures and prophecies...But somehow a blind beggar could "see" that Jesus was the Son of David, and calls Him by that name...The blind beggar asks that Jesus, Son of David, to have mercy on me...This blind man could see what others could not see -that Jesus is our Messiah and Savior...The blind beggar's weeping soul was heard by the Son of David...His eyes were healed, and His faith in God were strengthened that day...
Sometimes, if not many times, there are things around us that we just do not see what is presently around us...We can be blinded by many things (by money, cars, houses, clothes, and material things) -yet one blind beggar, who could not see, saw the Light...While others could not see who He was one without any sight was able to see...We must learn to see as the blind beggar saw and seen things...
