Her expertise spans regulatory compliance, facility management, and the ethical treatment of research animals. At the 2nd Joint Scientific Conference on Laboratory Animal Research, she will present on "AAALAC International Standards & Expectation" offering insights into the critical role professionals play in ensuring high-quality animal care that supports both scientific integrity and humane treatment.
AAALAC International Standards & Expectations – Common Research Animal Environment, Housing and Management and the Role of Research Scientists, Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
INTRODUCTION
AAALAC International promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary, peer-review assessment and accreditation programs. The collaborative efforts of Research scientists, AV and IACUC are pivotal in ensuring that research animal environments meet AAALAC’s standards, which emphasize high-quality care, ethical management, and the integration of animal welfare with sound scientific practices.
OBJECTIVES
Highlight the role of research scientists, AV, and IACUC in aligning animal housing and management practices with AAALAC International standards
Discuss AAALAC standards and expectations regarding the animal environment, including physical, social, and behavioral needs
Present commonly identify issues at the AAALAC site visits
CONTENT OVERVIEW
This session will provide comprehensive AAALAC International’s standards, such as Position Statements, Guidance Statements, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Reference Resources with particular emphasis on the Primary Standard, “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide, NRC, 2011)”. It will detail the multifaceted role of scientists, AV, IACUC, animal care and management team in shaping, implementing, and evaluating husbandry and management practices to meet and exceed these standards. Key components of animal housing—such as temperatures and humidity, minimum floor space allocation, the default social housing of social species, environmental enrichment, lighting, ventilation, and sanitation—will be discussed in the context of both recommendations of the Guide and the expectations of AAALAC Council on Accreditation. Real-world case examples from AAALAC assessments will be presented to illustrate common findings, successful corrective actions, and strategies for continuous improvement in animal care and use programs.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
A clearer understanding of AAALAC’s expectations for the animal environment and housing
Practical knowledge to enhance institutional compliance and accreditation readiness
Skills to lead or support improvements in animal care and use programs
CONCLUSIONS
Research scientists, AV, IACUC and animal management team play a critical role in upholding AAALAC International standards, influencing the quality of science and animal welfare. Through adherence to performance approach, they ensure that animal care and use programs are both ethically sound and scientifically robust.
