Have you ever wanted to crochet a top that fits you perfectly? One that you designed yourself? A top that no one else in the world owns? If so, then this is the pattern for you!
By following the steps below, you'll create the raglan top of your dreams. Have fun and let your creativity run wild!
This pattern is meant as a guide to create your own raglan top with a square yoke. It's up to you to decide what yarn to use, what stitch to use, what design you want to create, etc. I'm providing you the foundation and the structure, it's up to you to paint and decorate. If you need a little inspiration, visit my "Raglan Top Designs" page to see what I've created.
Have a measuring tape and a notebook around. Your body measurements is what creates this pattern! And I find it helpful to take notes as I create, such as what hook I used and what colors I want my next top to be.
With the yarn that you intend to use, create a swatch that measures approximately 4" x 4". You can do your swatch in any stitch you want the top to be: sc, hdc, dc, etc.. Experiment with different stitches and colors, but try stay with the same yarn weight (i.e. fingering, DK, bulky).
Depending on the yarn, it's best practice to wash your swatch beforehand. You'll learn a lot about how to yarn behaves (i.e. does it stretch?).
You're probably asking yourself, "Well, if I choose to make my top out of this fingering yarn, how much of it do I need?". Good question!
I cannot give you an exact number of yardage that you'll need for your top because it's your top! I don't know how long you want it to be, if you want to make it a long sleeve or a short sleeve, if you're using one or two strands, etc.. I'm still learning how much yarn I need for my own projects.
To help as much as I can, I'll include some resources to help you calculate the yardage in the "Tips & Tricks" page. In the end, this is my advice: buy more than what you think you'll need.
Follow the three steps in the sheet below to calculate your pattern. Select the option "Make a Copy" to save it to your Drive.
Now comes the fun part!
Using the calculations from the previous sheet, you'll create a raglan top specifically for you. This pattern is worked from top to bottom in rounds and it is a square yoke.
BODY
Starting ch: Under the "Neckline" table in Step 3, the starting chain is listed in blue. The starting chain is the total stitches of your neckline measurement. Chain this number and sl st in the first ch to make a circle. Begin working in rounds.
Rnd 1: Sc all around.
Rnd 2:
Using your preferred st, st half of your front & back st from the "Neckline" table. For example, if the number is 33, then only st 16. (You are creating the back of the top.)
Start armhole increase in next sc. Armhole increase is (st, ch 2, st) in sc. This increase counts as 1 st. St until you total the armholde st from "Neckline" table. Armhole increase again in last sc.
St your total front & back st. (This is the front of the top.)
Create next armhole piece with increase corners.
St until you read the end of the round and sl st at sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1. St in the same st. *St across to armhole increase. Increase in armhole increase.* Rep * to * to last armhole increase. St to the end. Sl st at the top of the st.
Rnd 4-?: Rep Rnd 3 until the desired length from neckline to armpit. Under the "Neckline" table, the number listed under 'Neck to armpit' is the total number of rows, starting from Rnd 2.
Tip: Try on the top as you go along! You may want to either shorten or extend this part, depending on the fit you want to accomplish.
Next Rnd - Shaping the Armholes: Ch 1. St in the same st. *St across to armhole increase. St 2 in armhole increase. Ch 1. St 2 in next armhole increase.* The first armhole has been created (you're joining the back to the front by joining the armhole increases together). Rep * to * 1 more time. St to the end. Sl st at the top of the st.
Next Rnd - Working the Body: Ch 1. St in the same st. St all around and st 1 in ch1 gap to the end. Sl st at the top of the st.
Rep rnd until the desired length has been achieved. Fasten off and weave in ends.
SLEEVES
Adding sleeves to your top is easy and can add that special touch. Below are a few ideas on how to create your sleeves.
Sc all around for a few rows to give it a simple edging.
Work desired st to an inch past your elbow for a 3/4 sleeve.
Work desired st to the end of your wrist for a full sleeve. Work a cuff if desired.
The possibilities are up to you! Try on your top and experiment with how the yarn drapes to see what would be the best sleeve. Sometimes, no sleeve is the best sleeve!
