Cancel culture often lacks consideration for those who have been canceled, but the question still remains how do they feel after being canceled and how does being canceled affect a person? For starters, according to Boar.Org, cancel culture negatively affects individuals through the destruction of their livelihoods. This can be seen through the demonization of those who are considered or who are deemed canceled.
Furthermore the impacts of cancel culture can also be seen in the further degradation of the Mental Health of those who have been deemed canceled. This impact was explained by Refocus where it was stated that often the effects of being canceled resulted in worsened Anxiety and Depression.
But what is the issue with this? Some of you may think “surely they deserve it”, the issue with cancel culture lies on the fact that the lead towards being canceled often is found in out of context clips or tidbits of the bigger situation. The issue with this is that the process towards redemption is oftentimes a very steep and impossible road to traverse, and this is where the true problem lies is its irreversibility towards the damage that was caused to these individuals.
“Well, if we should not cancel people, but free speech is a right, what do we do then?” Cancel Culture is not all bad, the issue often stems from its process though, there are ways to cancel ethically. How is this you may ask, the simplest way is through taking into consideration the bigger picture and actually making an effort towards understanding the whole situation before jumping into conclusions and making generalizations of people just on the basis of the out of context situation.
Overall, cancel culture in its core is something that is beneficial though, when used incorrectly it leads towards the devastation of the livelihoods of those unfortunate enough to be caught in its grasp. The only solution to this is taking an extra step towards shedding light on the current issue instead of taking everything at face value, this is because as they always say there's always two sides to the coin.
Although, what happens when you are the one the is being canceled? What are some rules one should follow to avoid being canceled?
