What is Cancel Culture?
Have you ever heard of the term ‘cancel culture’ during your daily use of social media and technology? If not, it refers to the way of behaving in a society or group, in which it is common to completely reject and stop supporting someone because they have said or done something that is offensive. The most notable social media where one can see this digital phenomenon is Twitter.
Some interesting statistics!
Here are two famous individuals you might know who have fallen victim to cancel culture...
Kanye West
“I can say antisemitic things, and Adidas can't drop me. Now what?”
Will Smith
"You have to forgive people."
But why does it happen?
In cancel culture, one concept that is frequently seen is what is known as "Mob Mentality." Mob mentality, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a large and disorderly crowd of people bent on riotous or destructive action. This definition is especially true for cancel culture, since there is an innumerable group of people who want to “cancel” a person. It usually results in severe public backlash and personal attacks against the individual getting canceled.
Some people would go on to describe cancel culture as a “with them or against them” type of thinking, where either one agrees or is against the majority. This suppresses those with potential differing opinions, and when there is no space for them, it is impossible to properly seek out the truth. The opportunity to learn from the opposing side is lost alongside the chance to harbor valuable discussions, which would allow both sides to learn from one another.
So, what should we do?
There are many things one can do, which is further discussed in the three articles. Although, in general, one should first take into consideration of the difference between information and misinformation. Not only that, there are also other keywords to understand before jumping into cancel culture:
