How to get to the conference site

Recommended option: shuttle from Berlin:

If you travel via Berlin: We will organise minibuses that will bring us to the conference site.

Details will be posted closer to the conference.

If you do not participate in the organised shuttle from Berlin:

2 non-trivial recommendations: 

• only bring a backpack 

• contact and come together with someone from us who has already been there

You should arrive in Szklarska Poręba before the ski lifts stop running, which is at 16h30. 

If, however, this is not possible, you have two options:

• walk to the top of the mountain: 2 hours 40 min (not recommended in foggy weather). You can use this online route planner: https://mapa-turystyczna.pl

• hire a snow scooter (expensive)

By plane:

Arrival by plane is possible via Berlin, Warsaw, Wroclaw and Prague.

By train and bus:

• Prague: 

  1. The first option is a Flixbus that directly goes to Szklarska Poręba. However, there are only two of them every day, and only one before the ski lift stops running. This is probably the most convenient way since it is direct and quick. Note that the departure takes place at the Prague Main Bus Terminal.

  2. The second option is perhaps the quickest way to take by train. Take the fast train to Tanvlad and there, change train to Szklarska Poręba.

  3. In general, the best way to find bus/train connections in the Chech Republic is to search the route here: https://idos.idnes.cz/.

• Berlin: There is a train to Jelenia Góra with changes in Cottbus and Görlitz (ca. 5h), but only a few in the day, and to reach the lift in time you would have to take the early connection at 6:23 from Hauptbahnhof. From Jelenia Góra there is a train to Szklarska Poreba Gorna (50 min.). It is a 20 min steep walk from the bus station to the ski lift if you go up by the little river. Alternatively you can take a cab from Jelenia Góra, though we do not know how much that would be.

• Wroclaw: There are around six trains per day from Wroclaw main station to Szklarska Poręba station. The train journey takes 3-3.5 hours.

• Note that there are two ski lodges accessible by foot from the ski lift: You will be accommodated in the lodge Szrenica (Schronisko Szrenica), which is straight uphill from the ski lift. Please travel in a group in case of foggy weather as it is very, very easy to get lost.

By car:

Szklarska Poręba can be reached from Jelenia Góra (Poland) or Harrachov (Czech Republic).

On foot:

• Czech Republic, Harrachov: The lodge can be reached by walking across the border (about 3 hours, mainly uphill). You should only attempt this if you are in good physical condition and have hiking boots and only if the weather is good (in any case do not walk alone unless you are experienced). Take a bus from Prague to Harrachov. There is a regular bus service from Prague to Harrachov (starting near metro station Černý Most, the fast service takes roughly two hours while the slower line is closer). The Czech travel planner IDOS has an English page for checking the details. If the weather is bad, you can always take a taxi. Otherwise take the path leading up the mountain to the Czech hostel Vosecká bouda. When you reach it, you are approximately 400 metres from the border. Turn left when you reach the Polish walking path immediately beyond the border; from here you will reach the hostel in about half an hour.
