24/25 Near Peer SSC (Student Selected Component)

Outline of SSC/Elective: 

• Practice based SSC; 

• 4-week placement; 

• Different from Year 5 GP placement – focus is on medical education; 

• Flexible timetable – students attend when needed for the teaching (maximum 3 days per week); 

• Year 5 student teachers assist the GP tutor in delivering teaching to younger year students (Yr1-Yr4) and other members of the practice team (allied health professionals); 

• Year 5 student teachers can carry out learning needs assessments, deliver tutorials, clinical skills teaching and run mock OSCES; 

• Allows GP tutor time to catch up with other work at the surgery; 

• Opportunity to develop clinical skills at the surgery - supervised surgeries, shadowing GP, Chronic Disease Clinics depending on GP practice and GP tutor capacity (not mandatory); 

• Central activities (Wednesday) to improve knowledge of teaching methods, giving feedback and evaluation of educational practice.
