"The real satisfaction from mathematics is in learning from others and sharing with others." - Bill Thurston
PARES ORDENADOS MANIFIESTO
Exploring Mathematics
Our program encourages the exploration of mathematics. We aim for every interaction and project to become an opportunity to uncover new perspectives, connect concepts, and foster a genuine desire to learn.
Building Connections
At Pares Ordenados, we cherish the connections formed between mentors and mentees—relationships that extend beyond academic learning to foster mutual growth and support.
Creating Community
Community is the heart of Pares Ordenados. We strive to create a space where every voice is heard, every contribution is valued, and every member feels part of something greater.
A Compassionate, Inclusive, and High-Quality Approach
We believe in an approach to mathematics that is both compassionate and inclusive, ensuring that every student feels welcomed and respected. Quality in learning is paramount, but never at the expense of the humanity and dignity of our participants.
WHAT?
Pares Ordenados is a free online mathematics mentorship program in Spanish. The program connects math undergrads with graduate students or early-career mathematicians around the world, who serve as mentors for semester-long reading projects.
WHO?
Pares Ordenados especially aims to provide such mentorship to Spanish-speaking students in Latin America from underrepresented groups in mathematics or at non-research oriented universities.
Requirements for Mentors
Proficiency in Spanish.
Be a graduate student in the mathematical sciences, or a recent PhD graduate.
Requirements for Mentees
Proficiency in Spanish.
Applicants must be students who are enrolled in a non-research-focused undergraduate program or identify as members of underrepresented groups in mathematics (or related fields).
Prior coursework in
differential and integral calculus,
linear algebra
is expected.
Applicants must demonstrate interest, dedication, and have the ability to commit 5 hours per week to the program.
WHEN?
The program is held once annually during the summer, with applications typically opening in April.
HOW?
Pares Ordenados takes place online.
Undergraduate students apply to be mentees.
Graduate students or early career mathematicians apply to be mentors.
Mentees and mentors are paired based on mutual interests. Each pair decides on a topic for the semester.
Each ordered pair (mentor, mentee) meets online for one hour weekly.
Halfway through the semester, each pair decides on a final project and writes a project description that must be sent to the organizers.
Halfway through the semester, students attend a virtual gathering to meet and interact with other mentees.
At the end of the semester, there is an online event where mentees give short presentations about their directed reading course, and attend the panel about Latinx/Hispanic Mathematicians Around The World.
WHAT FOR?
"What is belonging? The extent to which an individual feels accepted, valued, and legitimate within the community." - Deanna Haunsperger
Pares Ordenados is about the community! Apart from providing students a way to learn mathematics that otherwise they would not have access to, we also aim to foster connections among the members of our Latinx/Hispanic Math Community around the world.
