Professor MacLachlan's research interests lie in computational applied mathematics and scientific computation. In particular, his work centers on the development and analysis of finite-element and multigrid methods, typically for PDE-based models of fluid and solid mechanics. His work involves aspects of functional and numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, and physical modelling. He currently serves as a section editor of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, associate editor of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications and is on the editorial board of Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications. He is also co-chair of the program committee of the biennial Colorado Conference on Iterative and Multigrid Methods.
