Derby Car Procedures
Design Competition - Native Sons and Daughters Theme
The design competition will be held to select the Best Thematic Car Design. The theme is Native Sons and Daughters.
Cars should reflect Native American and Indigenous cultures, traditions, tribes, symbols, or heritage.
Cars entered in the design competition must be registered and submitted by 10:00 a.m.
Judging will be based on overall appearance, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Judging is subjective. All decisions of the judges are final and not subject to appeal.
Open Track Racing
The track will open at 11:00 a.m. for open racing.
All participants must follow the directions of the volunteers and judges at all times. The track may not be operated independently.
Participants may race their cars multiple times and record their run times. Track use, including the number and frequency of runs, is entirely under the control of the volunteers to ensure safety and fair access for all. Head-to-head races with other participants are permitted for exhibition and testing purposes only. This portion of the event is intended to be fun—enjoy the time with your kids!
“Pink slip” races may be conducted only if both parents explicitly agree, with a volunteer present to confirm consent. Participation is entirely voluntary and at the participants’ own risk. Be advised, irrespective of winner, any disputes shall be simply resolved in favor of a child NOT losing a car.
Build Area & Open Workshop
A limited number of build kits will be available for purchase. A build table with a small selection of tools will be provided, and some volunteer dads will be bringing additional tools to share.
This is a great opportunity to meet other families, collaborate, fine-tune your car, or experiment with new designs to take back to your pack or nation races.
Speed Challenge Competition
The Speed Challenge for the fastest car will begin at 2:30 p.m.
All competitors must register to participate.
Maximum car weight: 6.5 ounces on OUR SCALE.
Cars must use four regulation wheels and may not use momentum assistance. No motors, magnets, springs, or other mechanical assistance permitted.
Car eligibility will be determined by the judges. Judges may inspect cars at any time, and all determinations are final.
Once submitted, cars may not be modified, repaired, or adjusted for any reason. Rocky IV - “if it dies, it dies”.
Cars should be prepared to run up to three races.
Competition Format:
Each registered car will run one qualifying race. The recorded time from that run will be final.
The nine fastest cars based on single-run qualifying times will advance to the semifinals.
Three semifinal heats will be conducted:
Each heat will include one of the top three fastest qualifying cars.
Remaining cars will be selected at random, using a method determined by the judges.
The winners of the three semifinal heats will compete in a single final race to determine the Speed Champion.
Timing equipment and recorded results are official and final, except in the event of an obvious track malfunction as determined by the judges in which case the preceding heat shall be rerun. Notwithstanding track malfunction, no modifications or repairs to cars will be permitted during speed trials.
Sportsmanship
This event is about fun, learning, and sportsmanship. Complaining, poor conduct, or disrespect toward competitors or judges will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification—and public embarrassment.
Be a role model. Don’t be that guy.
