Mescalero Apache
Description:
While the exact origins of horse hair raku are not fully known, the technique is believed to have come from southwestern tribes. This decorative method is done by applying carbonaceous materials (such as horse hair, feathers, and sugar) to burnished vessels upon removing them from a bisque firing. The heat of the vessels then burns the materials, leaving behind the carbon to form organic patterns. This technique is one that can occasionally test your ability to trust the process, but I have found that more often than not, the results create beautifully unique patterns. No two pieces come out the same, and that has been the biggest joy I’ve found in creating these forms.
