An End To Leaning In: A New Vision For Women In Leadership  Session Full Room 211

Jennie Weiner

Associate Professor of Education Leadership, Neag School of Education

In this session, I will discuss the impetus for the book “Education Lead(her)ship: Advancing Women in K-12 Education Administration” and specifically we will engage in how gender discrimination and gendered racism impact women’s access to and ability to thrive in leadership broadly. I will introduce some ideas to help us make sense of this phenomenon including the concept of the “double bind” in which women leaders must negotiate a thin tightrope of acting neither too “strong” or too “soft” and also discuss a path forward and how to build organizations where all members can thrive.

Time will be spent discussing the impact of whiteness and hypermasculinity, sense of community and sense of belonging, and the need for connection in white, male dominated spaces.

Additionally, time will be spent discussing results of the studies and engaging session attendees in an interactive and collaborative conversation that leverages findings and makes connections to attendees own practice and experiences.
